About This Property

Southern Comfort Camping Resort was purchased by Bill and Margaret Mooney in 1990, before retiring with 24 years in the military. While in the military, they had traveled to Japan, Guam, Hawaii, Germany, Carribean, and Bermuda. Mr. Mooney was last stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. After retirement from their global travels, they chose Biloxi, MS as their home, because of the warm hospitality of the people. In 1974, when Mr. Mooney retired from the Air Force, he and his wife found an underdeveloped piece of property that he personally developed and structured into what was then known as Mooney Lake.

The property had a 20 acre spring fed lake and all new facilities. The Mooney’s then continued in their new journey and purchased another piece of property that was also developed on the beach after the ruins of hurricane Frederick. This property was on the beach and was then known as Biloxi Beach Campground. At this point the Mooney’s realized their passion for the camping industry and the enjoyment of people. Biloxi Beach was a huge success and was sold shortly after the arrival of the gaming industry in 1992. Southern Comfort’s first day of business was May 31 1990. Unlike the two previous parks that Mr. Mooney developed, Southern Comfort had already been in operation. The Mooney’s enjoyed their new centrally located property with 6 acres on the beach. Looking out at the beautiful sunrises, and sunsets everyday was amazing! In 2005 hurricane Katrina hit and absolutely devastated the MS Gulf Coast.

However, Southern Comfort was spared any major damage. This truly came as a blessing because the Mooney’s were already facing a much bigger challenge, with Margaret battling breast cancer. After rigorous treatments, Margaret was declared cancer free. In Nov. 2010, the parks founder, the beloved Mr. Mooney passed away. Currently, the Mooney’s still own and operate the daily activities of Southern Comfort. They are happy to welcome all their long time customers, and look forward to meeting all their new customers!
