Louisiana Campgrounds

Originally named for the Texas folk hero who traveled extensively in the western reaches of Louisiana, Sam Houston Jones was given its current name in honor of the state's 37th governor, who was instrumental in setting aside this tract of land for the public to enjoy for both day-use and overnight visitors.
Because the caretakers of this 1,087-acre park have worked to keep the land in its natural state, abundant wildlife inhabits the area. Tree-filled lagoons and a mixed pine and hardwood forest combine to create a unique natural environment. The park is located just north of the most productive birding region of Louisiana. The bird watching is always excellent, but at certain times of year, nearly 200 species of birds can be seen at or within 30 miles of the site.

This is an older park and needs maintenance. Website states 14 day stay limit. The camper in front of us obviously is permanent (maybe he is a camp host). Non running truck in front of camper (it is a white truck, green with moss). The roads are very small and tight. Our motorhome is 42 feet and we got in. The above mentioned non running truck made it harder to get into our space. About 30% of the campers are very heavy drinkers. Their loud music stopped about sunset. Maybe the rain had something to do with it. About half the campers have kids. They were out and about having fun. That is good. Overall, if your idea of state park camping is spots spaced wide apart and quiet, this is not the park for you. If you're a heavy drinker and enjoy loud music with little space between campsites, this is the park for you.
