Work Camping – How to earn a living while traveling (Part 2)

Quick Travel Update

I thought that before we jump into continuing our conversation around work camping I would give you a quick update on where we are. We just finished a 2 week stay in Mexico Beach, Florida. The weather has warmed up a little so we did get to enjoy a little beach time. A little disappointed on the water temperature, tried to do some fishing but because the water temperature is still a little too cool they were not biting.

It was still a nice way to spend an afternoon! We moved from Mexico Beach, Florida to Holt, Florida on Saturday and will spend the next 10 days here before heading onto New Orleans. Some very good friends from Virginia are flying into New Orleans for the weekend to visit then Vicki and I will spend the next week at a training / sales rally for our company. Now that the update is out of the way let’s jump back into our discussion about Work Camping!

Work Camping to Support yourself while living on the road

Now we are going to look at work camping from a different angle. We are going to look at how you can do work camping jobs that will actually help you to earn a living and support yourself while traveling as a full time RVer. Make sure to look at Part one on work camping for more insight.

Guest Guides – Campground maps- Southeast Publications

Developing guest guides for campgrounds is really a great way to earn a good living while giving you the flexibility to travel just about anywhere you want in the United States and Canada. Southeast Publications develops guest guides for over 3500 campgrounds across the USA and Canada. In addition they develop guest guides for Amusement Parks, Airports, College and University campuses as well as Real Estate folders, Golf Score Cards and Chamber of Commerce listing to name just a few.

While developing the guest guides the campground gives you a 2 week complementary stay (no site rent). The guest guide is that brochure you receive when you arrive at a campground that shows you where to park as well as the parks amenities then on the inside is a local area map with local businesses. A good example is this guest guide from Abita Springs RV Resort.

Part of developing the guest guide is going out and working with local businesses to get them to participate within the guest guide. This gives park guest like yourself various options of local shopping, attractions and restaurants. In addition to the 2 week complementary stay Southeast pays you a commission on the Ads that you sell. You can really make good money, more than enough to support yourself while traveling. If you would like more information on this opportunity visit the South East Publications website. If you decide to pursue an opportunity with Southeast please be sure to put Matt and Vicki Hulbert down as a reference.

Mobile Survey Technician

Although Vicki and I never pursued this particular job we have met some that have. It’s basically working for the gas company and detecting leaks on their pipelines. There are several companies that offer this type of position and most pay $9.00 hr. or more plus various expenses that they cover. You can find out more at the Happy Vagabonds website. In addition to the Mobile Survey Technician jobs they have lots of other listings this site is definitely a good resource for Work Camp Jobs.

Don’t forget to plan ahead!

When deciding to go full time on the road or if you are already full timing and looking for your next adventure, remember to plan ahead! I cannot stress this enough. Vicki and I made the mistake of not planning far enough ahead when we first went on the road and it did make the first part of our adventure a little scary. Looking for work camping jobs should be just as important as finding your RV.

I think this might be a good time to share with you the path that Vicki and I took. The path we have decided on works well for us and it took us a couple of years to get to this point but we truly are enjoying the lifestyle now.

Vicki and I actually do 3 different work camp jobs throughout the year. From around the first week of October through Christmas Eve we work with Christmas trees. In addition to just being lot managers we help out with some of the training and other various aspects. Then after Christmas trees we spend the next 6 months building guest guides for various campgrounds throughout the eastern United States.

We work our way to North Carolina by the 3rd week of June and then work a Fireworks stand through July 4th. This gives us a nice influx of cash and helps with our 10 day vacation we take the first week of August each year. Then after fireworks we go back to guest guides till October. We really enjoy what we are doing, we get some variation in our year so we don’t get burnt out or stuck in a rut. Because most of the time we are working on building guest guides, every 2 weeks we get to go to a new town, meet new people and have a new adventure.

The bottom line you need to find what works for you in your situation. There are tons of jobs out there you just have to be willing to put in a little effort to find the one that will help you achieve your dream.

Till next time, Safe Travels!
