With the Correct Info: Parts Come With Ease
02-15-2016

RV owners know all too well that finding the parts you need for your RV can be a bit challenging and even a bit frustrating. Being a Parts Manager for the past few years, I have learned a lot very quickly when it comes to getting what you want and need to keep your coach on the road.
Vehicle Identification Number
Your vehicle identification number breaks down more information than most people realize. The information is unique to each manufacturer, engine size, body style, etc. When searching for parts specific to your coach or chassis, the VIN will help the manufacturer to get a list of all parts used on your coach and even will help them with paint codes and decal lay-out.
Year, Make, & Model
Many times, parts can be found by having the year, make, and model of your coach. This information can give your parts person at least an idea as to who they need to reach out to for more information. Many RV manufacturers offer parts breakdowns for every year, make, and model that can be accessed online. Remember when giving your vehicle information that you know the chassis manufacturer as well as the coach make and model. Also, double check the year of the chassis because some coaches can be a year or two older than the actual chassis.
Serial Number
Coach manufacturers give each motorhome a serial number that will allow repair shops to look up every part that was installed into each coach. These serial numbers are imperative to getting the correct parts. The VIN can be used to locate the serial number of your coach, but many coaches have serial number plates either on the outside or next to your VIN plate. Serial numbers are also important when looking for parts for any appliance. The appliance serial number will help to figure out the model and series of the parts you need for your appliance.
Pictures worth a Thousand Words
If there is one thing I have learned in the past few years it is pictures truly are worth a thousand words. I believe I have more pictures of RV parts on my phone than I do of my children or my dogs, and I really like my dogs! These photos help me every day to find exactly what it is my customers need. Be sure to include close-ups as well as farther back to make sure the picture has the correct context. I even have many customers send me pictures of their VIN and serial numbers. Armed with this information, I can find anything…well almost anything.
In the pursuit of parts, as long as you come prepared, you will be able to get what you need. Unfortunately, with older coaches, upgrades may need to be made due to the ever changing market. Many parts can also be purchased aftermarket when older parts become obsolete. Your local parts person may need a little more time at that point but the more information and photos you have, the easier the search will be. Good luck in your pursuit and happy trails…
