Weight-Distributing Hitch Use

A weight-distributing (WD) hitch is probably one of the best RV-related inventions ever developed. When you tow a travel trailer, a weight-distributing hitch can make your towing more fun, safer and relaxing with significantly reduced vehicle sway and much improved steering and handling. In my book, a product like that is worth using.
In use, a properly adjusted weight-distributing hitch, as its name implies, distributes the trailer’s hitch weight evenly between the tow vehicle’s front and rear axles. That keeps the tow rig’s front-and-back weight balance and suspension loading as it should be, and in turn, that means its driving and handling characteristics are as the factory intended.
On the other hand, a dead-weight hitch, with a simple hitch ball on a mount, keeps all of the hitch weight pushing down on the ball. That provides weight leverage on the back of the tow rig, and that removes weight from the front end, which can induce poor steering characteristics and instability. On lighter trailers with minimal hitch weight and a strong tow rig, the weight can be no big deal. A larger trailer with significant hitch weight can almost always benefit from use of a weight-distributing hitch.
A weight-distributing hitch can easily cure that dead-weight hitch problem.
