Summer means vacation and many families take their vacations in sunny Florida for lots of fun in the sun. There’s plenty of fun to be had with picnics, barbeques, and taking a dip in the local swimming hole. Some of Florida’s summer festivities could pose a health risk to both people and pets. In fact, it has reached critical status, prompting Florida governor Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency in two of the state’s counties.
Portions of Florida, particularly in the southwest part of the state, are contending with the massive spread of toxic algae blooms in the state’s natural waters. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae or red tides, is toxic to humans, animals, and fish. It can upset the local ecosystem and cause significant economic difficulties for impacted areas.
What are toxic algae blooms?
Harmful or toxic algal blooms occur when there is an overgrowth of algae in lakes, rivers, or other water systems. While there are algae blooms that produce and release harmful toxins into marine or fresh waters, even algae blooms deemed nontoxic can still hurt local economies and the environment. Although there is a current crisis in Florida, algal blooms can be found in all 50 states.
They can also produce toxins that are extremely dangerous. They can make humans and animals sick, and in some cases exposure can even be fatal. They create dead zones in water, killing all aquatic life. When harmful algal blooms contaminate drinking water it increases associated costs due to the need for added water treatment. Industries that depend on clean water can also be negatively impacted. This situation is nothing to take lightly.
