The Top States for RVing in the USA will give you an amazing experience with the vast open spaces of the country alongside an expansive interstate and highway system making once far off reaches now easily accessible. From coast to coast and everywhere in between sit destinations that cater to, or at least allow access to, RV enthusiasts and their specific type of travel. While a list of every possible location would command a full-length guide book to even scratch the surface, here are a few favorite states for RVers to explore in depth.
Best States for Beauty, Experience, and Adventure
California
While images of horrible traffic jams and sprawling cities come to mind when thinking of driving in California, the state actually has an abundance of options for the avid RVer. Steer clear of the major cities and you will be able to cruise along wide highways towards world renown destinations. Must see locations include Redwood National and State Parks, Yosemite National Park, and Joshua Tree. There are also a large number of RV parks near or around some of the iconic coastal towns and cities providing epic sunsets and plenty of beach front shenanigans for ocean lovers. Stretching almost 900 miles from tip to tail, California offers long lengths of open road for any RVer and if you can keep out of the notorious traffic, you’ll be sure to uncover some of the well-known gems in the Golden State.
Be Sure to Visit: Auburn RV Resort
Utah
Driving through Utah for the first time is an awe inspiring experience. Red rock formations sprout from the western slope of the Rockies like a once thriving Martian citadel and the barren desserts give way to green forests and rolling rivers. There are plenty of options for easy access camping in and around Moab, with Arches National Park providing stunning rock formations and endless starry skies. BLM and other public lands exist around this area as well but be sure to check road conditions or ask fellow RVers what roads are safe and sound for big rigs as the region is well-known for rugged and rowdy 4x4 roads. Zion River Resort is well known, for good reason, in the RV camping community and is worth a visit for at least a week to give you a perfect basecamp to explore nearby Zion National Park.
Be Sure to Visit: Bear Lake / Marina Side KOA
Wyoming
The main attraction in the Cowboy State is the well-known and must visit Yellowstone National Park. This should be on everyone’s travel list, whether you arrive by RV or any other means. The park speaks the spirit of the raw, old west and is equal parts natural wonder and beauty with a taste of wild unknown. Aside from Yellowstone, there are plenty of other lesser known destinations and acres upon acres of wild lands to explore and camp in. Devil’s Tower KOA is a great spot to catch a glimpse of this iconic rock formation. This was America’s first national monument, designated as such by Teddy Roosevelt in 1906 during one of his western escapades.
Best States for Full-Time RVing
If you are interested in living the RV lifestyle full-time then you’ll want to know the states listed below as they have beneficial qualities and legalities that make them a logical choice for full-time RVers due to lack of income tax, easy processes to gain residency, and wonderful RV parks and camping locations to explore. The best place for any full-time RVer is ultimately a personal decision but these three states attract more fully committed RV folks than anywhere else in the country.
Texas
Texas is vast. You could drive your RV around for weeks and still discover new towns and RV parks. Big Bend is a popular RV destination in the southwestern reaches of the Lone Star State. There is no income tax here and you can renew vehicle registrations through the mail - making it easy to romp around the country and still call Texas home. Texas also has easy absentee voting systems, great food, and plenty of friendly faces to greet you as you travel from town to town. Fredericksburg KOA is a great location to take in the sites and rolling green forests of the state’s popular Hill Country.
South Dakota
South Dakota may seem like an odd state to call home base for a full-time RVer, but it has its benefits. This is also one of the states with no income tax but it also has some of the cheapest sales tax in the country making it a good location for those looking to retire or live cheaply. Alongside the financial benefits, there are plenty of great RV parks and camping locations to enjoy the scenic beauty of the state. Mount Rushmore makes for a fun RV experience while the open prairies in the summertime make for memorable nights around the campfire chasing fireflies.
Be Sure to Visit: Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park of Sioux Falls
Florida
Florida has been enticing RVers for generations. The closest to a tropical destination as it gets in the lower 48 means this state attracts snowbirds, retired folks, and beach loving partyers in droves. There is no income tax here either and plenty of beach front access to enjoy the warm waters and white sands of either the rolling Atlantic or the alluring Gulf of Mexico. Fort De Soto Park is kind of like an RVers wonderland with plenty of beaches, palm trees, and piña coladas to satisfy any Florida-esque urges one might have. Driving your rig as far south as possible in the states comes recommended and the highways that connect the Florida Keys are sure to bring a smile to your face as you seemingly island hop in an RV. Bahia Honda State Park is a great place to experience the magic of the keys and find out exactly what Jimmy Buffet is talking about.
