If you are reading this, chances are you already know the number one reason to become a full-time RVer- because you want to! But, if something about working a “regular” job and having a house that doesn’t roll you to magical adventures has a grip on you, here are a few more reasons to get going!
Maybe you are already on the road and question if it’s still the right fit. Every now and again, it is a good idea to re-evaluate choices. A choice to become a full-time RVer is one of those. When things become inconvenient, it makes understanding why one decided to live in a motorhome difficult to remember.
Things can break down on your RV or tow car. Expensive things can need fixing. There are limited options in restaurants (not all have available parking for a 43-foot motorhome pulling a 24-foot trailer...in fact, most don’t). We have limited decorating options since we are driving our home around frequently. Sometimes I need to remind myself WHY I chose to go full-time to begin with.
My Bed is My Bed
Prior to buying our motorhome, we traveled frequently for my husband’s work. This meant that several months out of the year we paid either a house payment or rent on an apartment, as well as additional motel/hotel expenses. This equaled, basically, the amount of two house payments each month.
Furthermore, while our own, pillow-topped mattress was safely situated in our home, we were sleeping each night on a bed that had been previously shared by countless other couples. We were carrying our belongings around, just to return to our own abode in time to change the dusty sheets on our bed and vacuum our floors.
Many more people than ever before are appreciating the value of traveling by RV and not having to share your space with anyone outside of your immediate family. Your bed, bathroom and kitchen are all your own. You can clean them as you see fit and not wonder if anyone else who passed through takes them same attention to cleaning as you do.
I Can Cook
Probably my biggest beef with traveling constantly is the need to eat out daily at restaurants and fast-food joints. This is not only bad for one’s health, but also expensive. Although I was more than content to cook in a crockpot or on a hot plate in motels, not all inns had adequate sinks for dish washing, which required some creative problem solving on my part. My motorhome has a full kitchen equipped with a residential-sized refrigerator. Problem solved! There are also countless recipes found online that are perfect for an RV kitchen!
Better Way to Work While You Travel
Working while you travel can be inconvenient, if not impossible. In a motel, Internet isn’t always guaranteed. Some only provide Wi-Fi in the lobby. Even if your room has online access, you may be charged an extra fee, and if it IS free, chances are many guests of the hotel are using it causing the Internet to be slower than you expect. That’s if you can get on it at all.
With your RV, however, you at least know what the limitations of your system are. You have a ready power source, as long as you’re plugged into shore power. Many parks provide free Wi-Fi and if you have difficulty getting decent reception, you can get a booster, or even relocate to a better location free of charge.
Pets Stay for Free
We have five pets that we’ve adopted…two cats that were birthed by a stray in a shed at our most recent brick-n-mortar house, one kitten we found on a cliff face after a storm, and two dogs. Many people enjoy traveling with their pets, and this in fact, reduces the anxiety for the person and the pet rather than leaving furry family-members behind.
Not all motels allow pets, and those that do often require guests to occupy rooms reserved for pets and smokers. Even hotels that permit animals often place restrictions on the number or size or subject owners to fees that range from small, flat rates to large per-pet fees. This can get expensive, but when you take an RV, you can bring as many pets as you want for no additional charge.
In Conclusion
With the reduced cost of living and increased versatility, it has been obvious that taking our motorhome when traveling has definitely been the best option. For some people, the benefits of living in a motorhome exceed the initial expenses. Also, with all of the options available, there is bound to be a model that fits your needs, as well as your budget.
