Three Reasons To Full Time with Kids

As most of you know, my family travels in our RV full-time with our 6-year-old son. What most of you don’t know is that a huge part of the reason we do this is actually for our son. When we chose to take on this lifestyle, our kiddo wasn’t an afterthought and we didn’t mold our plans for him around our desire to travel. Instead, our plans to travel were molded around him and his needs.
Think this doesn’t make any sense? I encourage you to think again. Travel is an amazing opportunity for kids. My boy has learned more on the road than he ever would learn sitting around at home, and best of all, we have had the chance to learn it all with him.
Here are three reasons all parents should seriously consider hitting the road with their little ones.
#1: Education
You simply cannot beat the education that is gained through travel. From visiting actual historical sights as we read about them to learning about the importance of budgeting when on a long trip, our kid has been exposed to all sorts of interesting things through our adventures. He has seen incredible natural sights and fascinating museums, and through it all he has been engaged and ready to soak up every bit of information he can.
#2: Open-Mindedness
Another thing fostered through travel is an open mind. When a person sits in one place and associates with only one group of people, it is very easy to develop a closed mind. Traveling forces us to get out and chat with all kinds of people. It challenges our entire family to consider views that are opposite ours and helps us see things from other points of view. I hope these experiences help give my son an open mind and a heart of acceptance.
#3: Flexibility
There’s no denying the fact that I’m high-strung. On the other hand, it’s hard to ignore the fact that my husband is as stubborn as they come. Unfortunately, our kid was blessed with both of these traits, something that can make less-than-stellar situations even more stressful.
Fortunately, I believe that our continuous travel is helping our little dude learn how to cope with unfortunate circumstances. He is forced to deal with issues such as flat tires, breakdowns, and messed-up campground reservations, and make the best of them even though it might mean he doesn't get to go swimming or play on the playground as he had planned. This is enormous for us, as there was a time when a problem that caused a change in plans would have sent our son over the edge. This isn’t to say he’s perfect in upsetting situations, but he is making progress.
These are just three of the dozens of reasons to take your kids on adventures. Whether you choose to travel full-time or take weekend trips, you can bet your camping journeys will provide learning experiences galore.
