Things to Do While RVing

If there was a theme song for full-time RV’ing, it might just be “Too Much Time on My Hands,” from the 1981 classic “Paradise Theater” album by Styx.
Or, if we could pick a movie that best sums up our full-time RV lifestyle? That would be “Groundhog Day,” the equally classic 1993 movie starring Bill Murray.
While life on the road has its ups, it also has its downs. As in downtime. Lots of it. We are a family of four, with two kids ages 12 and 15. They do our own version of roadschool while we are traveling, which in our case means they do all of their school online. No sports, no extracurriculars, no additional activities.
We also have no brick-and-mortar home to clean and maintain, no full-time jobs to go to and no set timeline to be anywhere.
Which is great, except that with no schedule to follow, we often tend to do nothing all day. We fall into a mundane routine that really is no routine.
We get up in the morning, the kids do schoolwork, then we either drive to our next destination or do some sightseeing in the area where we are already parked.
And, truthfully, some days we just sit around and do nothing. We might read, or watch TV, or sit outside.
Sometimes, after traversing 30 states in less than four months, you forget where you are - and where you’ve been.
But that’s kind of the whole point. This is a journey. An adventure. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to slow down and take it easy. It’s relaxing and wonderful and we are very lucky to be able to have this time together as a family. It is a great life to live – seeing the country and showing our kids all its beauty.
At some point, though, too much time can be … too much. So, how do we stay busy while full-time RV’ing? What do we do to pass the time, preferably in a productive way? How do we keep from going crazy on the road?
To get us more organized and motivated, I’ve made a list of all the amazing and positive things we can do while we travel full-time in our RV:
We have enough free time right now to do any or all of those things.
Yes, this is going to be great. We’ll accomplish everything on that list.
But not right now. Right now, we are going to sit outside in our comfy camp chairs, grill some dinner, enjoy an adult beverage, watch the sunset, and maybe play a board game or two with the kids.
Whoops. There goes another day of life on the road …

In fact, our handy-dandy magnetic calendar hanging on the refrigerator is currently stuck on December. Without the clock on our RV microwave, we’d be at a loss to tell you if it’s early morning or early evening. - Write a book.
- Journal.
- Scrapbook.
- Learn photography.
- Get up early every morning and exercise.
- Write letters, emails or make phone calls to relatives and friends that we rarely talk to.
- Teach our kids survival skills.
- Teach our kids Latin.
- Train for a triathlon.
- Design our perfect dream home.
- Invent something.
We have enough free time right now to do any or all of those things.
Yes, this is going to be great. We’ll accomplish everything on that list.
