Stepping Up Your RV Flooring

These days there are so many RV and trailer owners living fulltime in their coaches. It has become an easier, uninhibited way of life, not to mention a cheaper. When you are spending a majority of your time in your home on wheels you may need to make a few upgrades, starting with flooring. There are so many options when it comes to RV flooring. Figure out what your lifestyle is and make an knowledgeable decision based on the flooring that best suits you and your family.

Carpet-The Old Go To
Most RVs and trailers have some sort of carpeting in them. If you are a “carpet person” you may want to leave carpeting as your main type of flooring, but consider having different types of carpet. If you want a durable carpet, use one that is made of nylon instead of other fabrics like wool. Nylon carpet is easier to clean and keep clean than other carpet material. Be sure to have a lower profile carpet and pad otherwise you will find yourself wanting to vacuum 3 times a day. If you want the comfort of carpet when you walk around your coach with bare feet, remember one important thing. The darker the carpet the less dirt that shows.

Vinyl-ly An Easier Option?

Vinyl may seem like the perfect answer for those full-timers with children and pets.

Vinyl is considered to be easier to clean than carpet and more resilient and affordable than wood or tile. However, there are a few downfalls to vinyl. Depending on rather you are using vinyl sheets or vinyl tiles there are different things to consider. Sheets are more difficult to install than vinyl tiles but the tiles can allow dirt between the cracks which is almost impossible to clean. With the vinyl upkeep is easier than most other floor material. However, a word of warning if you are a Do It Yourself-er, be sure you seal it correctly because the vinyl can lift and cause a lot of trouble.

Fancy Feet and Tile Toes
I don’t know about you, but I love tile! Tile floors stay cooler and cleaner than any other type of floor. With some throw rugs around you can get the best of both worlds without the big mess. So why not just get the tile? I have two words for you “money” and “weight.” The cost to install tile alone is huge and the cost of the material makes it very pricy. It looks amazing and can help keep your coach temperature down, which means running your AC less often. Then there is the issue of weight. Tile is very heavy and can weigh down your coach. This issue will be a massive one if you travel from place to place a lot, due to the lower miles per gallon you will get. If you have a trailer it can also throw off the balancing of your coach.

There are a few more options such as hardwood and laminate that you can consider. The choices of color and material are endless and you can have any type of flooring in your coach that you could have in your house. I recommend visiting a reputable RV service center and have them go over all of your flooring options. You can be as fancy footed as you like or as practical as you should be. Happy Trails!
