Reasons to Visit Albuquerque, New Mexico

There are so many things to do in Albuquerque, New Mexico! One of our family’s favorite places to explore is the state of New Mexico. This place is seriously beautiful, and its nickname, “The Land of Enchantment,” is definitely accurate.

Part of the fun of exploring New Mexico is taking in all of the beautiful, untouched scenery. That said, there are a couple more-populated places that we enjoy. Of these, Albuquerque is one we return to time and time again.

We love Albuquerque for a variety of reasons. This desert city has lots to see and do, some seriously delicious food options, and some great RV parks. On top of all that, we love the gorgeous nature that surrounds the place and the relatively low cost of living in the area.

Are you planning a trip to New Mexico soon, or even just headed west on I-40? If so, you simply must make a stop in Albuquerque and experience this fantastic city.

Where to Stay

Of course, in order to properly explore a place, you must stay for at least a few nights. Fortunately, as mentioned before, good RV parks are plentiful in “The Q”. Below are some of our personal favorites.

Albuquerque KOA

Albuquerque KOA is where you want to be if you’re looking to do a little glamping. This park includes such amenities as a pool and hot tub, a dog park, a playground, horseshoes, and mini golf for the family to enjoy together, along with pull-through sites with full hookups.

Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post

Enchanted Trails RV Park and Trading Post is a nice, clean park with fantastic rates. It has a pool, laundry room, and clean bathhouses. It’s right off the highway, and the staff is beyond friendly. This park gives you a whole lot of bang for your buck.

High Desert RV Park

Another park that offers amazing value is High Desert RV Park. This place is simple, yes, but it offers breathtaking views of the desert and mountains. Additionally, its location right off I-40 is helpful, and the kind staff and clean facilities are absolutely wonderful. Best of all, the rates are some of the lowest we’ve seen.

Balloon View RV Park

Looking for a place to stay during Balloon Fiesta? Balloon View RV Park might be your place! This park offers guests a fantastic view of the balloons, meaning you can see the show without ever leaving your own yard.

What to Eat

Once your RV is parked, you’ll probably want to get some grub. We love all the restaurant options we’ve found in Albuquerque, and 100% recommend eating out a few times during your stay in order to experience these places. Here we’ve listed a few of our favorite Albuquerque restaurants to help you get started

Trifecta Coffee

My husband and I love to find new coffee shops to try. Lucky for us, Albuquerque has plenty. Our favorite is Trifecta Coffee. This roastery serves up excellent espresso and they offer all the typical coffee beverages, as well as some interesting ones—such as the “Lemon Verbeana”.

We highly recommend the mint mocha or the cold brew, along with one of their many delicious pastries.

Dog House Drive-In

When lunch time rolls around, you simply must head to Dog House. This itty-bitty hole-in-the-wall was featured in Breaking Bad. However, this is not the only reason to visit.

You see, this hot dog joint has some seriously awesome food. We especially love their chili, which has just the right consistency and spice. Their prices are pretty great as well.

Taqueria Mexico

Of course, no trip to New Mexico is complete without Mexican food. For this, we really like to go to Taqueria Mexico and order one of their enormous burritos to share.

The service here is fantastic, and the fact that they moved to a new spot is great because it means more seating than their previous tiny location. Just be sure you make it to the new location on Menaul, as the old location is now home to another (less delicious) restaurant.

What to See and Do

Finally, you will definitely want to explore the city a bit during your time there. This place offers so many things to do that choosing can be overwhelming. We recommend picking from the following options, all of which are wonderful.

Petroglyphs National Monument

Learn about the Native Americans that once traveled through the area, and the artwork and messages (known as petroglyphs) they left behind on the rocks. Explore the park and see the petroglyphs for yourself. Admission is free and there is a Junior Ranger program for little ones.

Sandia Peak Tramway

The longest aerial tram ride in North America, Sandia Peak Tramway is an incredible way to see the gorgeous scenery of New Mexico. This attraction is a little bit pricey, but well worth it if you enjoy beautiful views—especially if you plan to take photographs.

ABQ BioPark

Enjoy a good zoo? Like to explore botanical gardens? You can experience both at ABQ BioPark. They have a new penguin exhibit that is incredible, and the entire park is quite walkable.

We do recommend going during the spring or fall, as summer can be brutally hot and winter uncomfortably chilly.

New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science

Anyone who loves science will enjoy this museum. This place features an awesome dinosaur exhibit that focuses a lot of attention on evolution. You’ll also find a cool brain exhibit, as well as an interesting section on space. This is a place that both kids and adults can enjoy together.

Explora

If you have kids, you simply must visit Explora. This awesome, hands-on science museum is the perfect way to spend some time as a family. There are all kinds of fun things to learn and explore here, and every child is sure to find something that interests them.

Balloon Fiesta

Lastly, we must mention the Balloon Fiesta. Yes, this is an event that happens only once a year. However, it is absolutely epic and should be experienced by everyone at least once.

For this reason, we highly recommend planning a trip for early October. While this will mean more crowds to contend with, the beauty of watching the sky filled with gorgeous balloons makes it all worthwhile.
