When you have an RV generator, it's easy to feel as though you have unlimited access to electricity whether you're connected to shore power or not. However, without regular use and proper maintenance, it may quit without warning, leaving you in the dark. One of the most common causes of a generator that fails to start is being left inactive too long. When it isn't started periodically, its fuel becomes "sticky," its seals dry, and its bearings may rust. Running the generator—even when it's stored or you're using shore power—at least two hours a month to circulate new fuel helps prevent that and makes it more fuel-efficient. Make sure to check the oil level and that there are no leaks before starting it up.
Additionally, periodic maintenance is recommended at set intervals based on the hours of operation and passage of time. It is designed to keep the generation set (gen-set) working and working properly. To determine when to perform the maintenance—or schedule it—check the owner's manual for the specific, periodic maintenance schedules listed for your generator type. Then, monitor the generator’s hour meter or track the meter manually. Follow the suggested servicing intervals—either by taking it to a service station or performing the following tasks yourself—and the operating and storing procedures to keep the gen-set working reliably for years to come.

How to Change the Generator’s Oil Filter
Typically, the first maintenance job required is the oil change. Generators, depending on the model, can run 75 to 200 hours between oil changes. Since Onan gen-sets are the most prevalent, the following directions are for that model; check the owner's manual for others.
Begin by turning off the gen-set and letting it sit for an hour or two before attempting to change the oil. This allows the oil to cool. If it hasn't been used for a while, start the generator and run it for about five minutes so the oil is warm enough to completely drain from the engine. Basically, it shouldn't be too hot or cold. Then, locate the oil fill access point at the top of the generator and remove the cover to ensure there isn't a vacuum when you open the drain bolt.
Place a piece of cardboard or a tarp underneath to catch any accidental spills. Then, crawl under the RV to locate the oil plug. It's typically visible and is easily removed with a socket set or a wrench. Place a funnel in a disposable receptacle like an empty milk or water jug to catch all the oil. It takes about five minutes for the oil to drain completely. Then replace the oil drain bolt. Make it snug, but avoid over-tightening.
The next step is to replace the oil filter. Open the access door on the bottom side of the gen-set and locate the oil filter. It is immediately behind and to the right of the fuel filter. Loosen the filter with a regular oil wrench, but you can remove it the rest of the way by hand. Residual oil will likely pour out of the old filter, which is why having the tarp in place is a good idea. Use your finger to apply some oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter so it's properly sealed when it's installed. Use the wrench to tighten it, but make sure to avoid over-tightening. Close the hatch and crawl out from under the RV.
Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact amount, but generators generally take three-quarts of oil. With the funnel, slowly add the oil into the top of your generator, and then close the oil access point. When you start the generator, you'll hear the clicks of the engine priming. Make sure to run it for at least a few minutes to cycle the oil. Finish by throwing away the used filter and take the used oil to the closest oil reclamation facility.
How to Change the Fuel Filter
The process of changing the fuel filter requires two wrenches and only takes about five minutes to complete. On Onan generators, the fuel filter is found in the access bay under the generator, in front and to the left of the oil filter. Use the larger wrench to loosen the two hoses. A bit of fuel will drip out as the lines from the filter are released.
In the center of the filter, there's a bolt. Use the second wrench to release it and remove the old filter. Use the same bolt and nut to reattach the new filter. Then, reattach the fuel lines with the first wrench.
Close the access panel. Press the gen-set start button until you hear the clicking noise of the engine priming. Then, if the generator doesn’t turn over and start pumping normally right away, continue to prime it until it does.

How to Change the Air Filter
It's necessary to regularly check and clean or replace the air filter, or the buildup of dirt may enter the motor's air intake, decreasing efficiency. Generally, the housing of the air filter assembly of an Onan gen-set is easily found at the bottom and in front. Merely unscrew the wing nut attaching the cover to get to the filter.
Pull out the air filter and examine it. If it appears dirty, it needs to be cleaned or replaced. You may be able to merely clean it with compressed air, but you might need to wash it with soapy water. If it must be replaced, you can use one of the aftermarket brands available from the automotive section of many stores.
Place the new filter where the previous one was and put the cover back on. Thread the bolt through the center and screw the wingnut back on without over-tightening. This is such an easy job that should be checked regularly.
In Conclusion
In addition to routine maintenance, operating conditions like altitude and certain weather conditions may cause the generator to falter. Plus, it may be necessary to change the air, fuel, and oil filters more frequently when in dusty conditions. It's also a good idea to check and/or change the oil and all filters before storing it. With a bit of effort, time, and money, it is easy to maintain and even extend the generator's life, minimizing the likelihood of a disappointing—and potentially expensive—surprise.
