Making Money While RVing-- Here Is One Way It Can Be Done
Many RVers are looking for ways to make money while on the road. It can be done. I just finished doing it full time for twenty-five plus years. Was it easy, many times yes; but like any thing, sometimes it wasn't. The rewards of the freedom it allowed me and the fact that I was my own boss far out weighed the tough parts.

There is something good to be said for pretty much going where I wanted to when I wanted to and deciding every morning whether I HAD to get out of bed and go to work. There were very few that I didn't because I enjoyed what I was doing. To this day I tell people I am sure glad I didn't have a JOB I had to do. (Although some years I did as many as fifty plus jobs.)

If you have been RVing for any length of time at all you will have already seen the results of what I (or someone like me) has done. When you check in to most RV parks, you are usually given a copy of a Site Map of the park so you can find your parking spot and locate the amenities. Most of these maps will have a map of the local area inside with advertisements of businesses the park recommends. I sold those ads. This allowed me to finance my travels and more as an Independent Contractor with Southeast Publications, USA. Southeast is the largest site map producer in the world. It owns its own presses and has its own art department and as a consequence produces the best quality products. Since being founded by Peter Warrick, being the Best in the industry has always been the mission of the company. For a more detailed view of the company please visit their history page.

So by now you are probably wondering how this works. I will be brief. Let me preface that description by saying that Southeast provides support and training at every step of the process and help from its management teams is never more than a phone call away.

A year's supply of site maps is supplied at no cost to the establishment that may be an RV park, a fairgrounds, a marina or a number of other such places, In exchange for the maps, the content of which they have full control over, they supply the SEPI rep with an RV site for up to two weeks while they are working the job and a short letter of introduction. Reps are free to seek out parks (I am going to use that for short here in include those establishments I just mentioned) that do not have a SEPI map anywhere they wish in the United States. Once they have a signed contract from the park, they go to the park and help the park design the outside cover and then go out into the community and sell the advertising that goes inside. Once the maximum amount of advertising is sold, the paperwork is prepared and sent to the office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. When a job is received, a check is cut for the reps commission on funds that have been collected while selling. There is a print cost that must be met, the amount of which varies depending primarily on the number of copies that are to be printed; then the rep's commission is 65% after that. A few weeks later the rep and the park see a proof of the map to check for accuracy. When that is returned, the maps are printed and shipped to the park. This process is then repeated in subsequent years. Once you have lined a park it is yours to work for as long as you wish. Reps may work as many parks as they wish. Nowadays there are many on line adjuncts to this process that make it even easier.

I had the advantage of having a background in selling advertising before I joined, but it is absolutely not a requirement. Southeast provides the tools and the training so that anyone may be successful. There are no guarantees, but opportunity. I will tell you this, if you are not afraid to talk to people and are willing to be undaunted by being refused and are willing to go out and make the sales calls, you will succeed in this business. Southeast holds yearly company meetings where you have a chance to meet other reps and exchange ideas and experiences, thus continuously learning more and better techniques to employ.

I traveled well over 500,000 miles during my career, most of that in the states west of the Rockies during that time. I worked in the neighborhood of a thousand jobs (I did a job a week, rather than take two weeks per job). As as results I got to visit most of the National Parks and Monuments in those states, most of the fairgrounds in several of them and most of the state parks in several states as well. One of my favorite National Parks is Mesa Verde. I had time to pursue my interests in Pre-Columbian archaeology with an emphasis on rock art throughout that part of the world and part of Mexico. It allowed me time to learn to build websites and write a couple of books on rock art including a guide book, “Where to See Rock Art Washington Oregon Idaho”, on Where to See Rock Art in Oregon, Washington & Idaho. My showcase site with over 13,000 photos of rock art is HERE. I made innumerable trips up and down the west coast from border to border; visited countless museums and other historic attractions where ever I went.

Many folks use their RV's to travel to see family and schedule their work around that. Everyone has different motivations for why they lead the lifestyle. One of the most wonderful things, in my opinion about this “job,” is that it can be adapted to most.
