Make Memorial Day 2016 a Day to Remember
Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching. Memorial Day is a day to celebrate all of those who lost their lives while serving as active duty military. Memorial Day used to be known as Decoration Day, when the graves of our fallen heroes would be decorated to show our countries gratitude. These days we have all grown accustom to celebrating not only our fallen heroes, but all of our service men and women around the world. Many events are put on throughout the country including the National Memorial Day Concert which draws thousands of people each year. This year whether you are on the road or planning a Memorial weekend camp-out, here are some other events that you can enjoy RV style.

Mount Rushmore
What better way to honor America than to plan a family trip to one of our most prestigious landmarks.
South Dakota is beautiful this time of year with the average high temperature at right around 70 degrees. There are many wonderful campgrounds in the area including some KOAs. Get back to nature and allow yourself to sit in awe of this incredible manmade miracle. The lighting ceremony that is put on for Memorial Day each year is absolutely breathtaking.

Montello, Wisconsin
If camping-out and family picnics are more your families idea of fun, you may want to take a trip to Wisconsin. This time of year the weather is not as chilly as you would imagine. Temperature averages are in the 70s to 80s some years and the campgrounds host many exciting events. There is a Friday Night Fish Fry, wagon rides, and several tournaments from Goofy Golf to horseshoes. There is even a ceremony on Sunday to pay tribute to all those who have been lost in our military. Fun family times and fond memories await you on this holiday weekend.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
If parades and fireworks make your child’s eyes light up, Pittsburgh will delight you all. The parade is beautiful and brings the patriot out in everyone. When night falls bundle up for the Pyro Fest and take in all the excitement. The average temperature in the evening at the end of May can fall to about 55 degrees, but during the day it warms up to the 70s and 80s. There are plenty of great campgrounds in the area. Some even offer activities and events to celebrate the holiday.

If you are a full-timer and you want to show your spirit, decorate your coach and plan a campground potluck for your neighbors. It is a great time to get out and enjoy your fellow Americans and show your appreciation. My family and I have made several trips to meet with local Veterans at community planned picnics to take the time to just say thank you to our local veterans. You would be surprised how much it means to a Vet to have a teenage child walk up and shake his hand and simply thank him for his service. How you spend your 3 day weekend is up to you, but get out there and enjoy. Just take the time to look around at all of the opportunities you have to celebrate and remember that our nations heroes made all this possible for us. Happy trails and Happy Memorial Day!
