How to Support a Local Economy When You Travel

RVing is a great way to see the country and experience a variety of different areas and cultures. More travelers are becoming increasingly aware, though, of the importance to support the local economy wherever you go. Many people breeze in and breeze out with barely a ripple in the economy but with more travelers turning toward responsible travel in other countries as well as the U.S., there is an increase in awareness of just how much many communities rely on that support.
I shop local whenever I can. I go to farmer’s markets for my produce, eat at local restaurants, and right now I have been fortunate enough to find a local company that roasts their own coffee. I like to immerse myself in the culture of the area. I was first introduced to this concept when I worked in DC. I quickly learned to follow the locals and I found the best restaurants and even the best attractions. When I became a local I was able to fully appreciate this concept.
It is ethical, it is responsible, and it is fulfilling. Here are some ways to support a local economy when you travel in your RV.
Eat at Locally Owned Restaurants
When you eat at locally owned restaurants you not only support the economy, you also get to sample the local cuisine. Here are several sites that can help you find your next local culinary adventure:
-
Independent We Stand (local businesses including restaurants)
-
Google (search “locally owned restaurants near me” or “locally owned restaurants in city state”)
If you Take a Break from the RV, Sleep Local
If you decide to take a break from your RV (some people do) find a locally owned hotel or motel, rent a room, or stay at a bed and breakfast. Sites like AirBNB can put you in a local room or apartment, allowing you to really get a feel for the local vibe of an area.

Shop at Farmer’s Markets
I love farmer’s markets. They allow you to support local business and local farms while getting great food and often items handcrafted by locals as well. My Ultimate Guide to Farmer’s Markets will help you find the markets in your area.

Use the Local Public Transportation when you Can
Traveling how the locals travel can be a real boost to the local economy. Taxis, buses, and subways can get you where you need to go while keeping your footprint small and doing your part to boost the economy. You can also choose to hire a bike and get out for a ride. Of course, walking is always a good (and healthy) option.
Purchase from Local Craftsmen
Farmer’s markets and flea markets are great places to find local craftsmen, as are arts and crafts fairs and festivals. When purchasing souvenirs or gifts, look local first. You just might find something really unique and special while you make your contribution to the economy.
Opt for Local Businesses when you can for Purchasing Necessities
When you have necessities, like groceries, try to choose a local store if possible. When you have other needs look local first and see if you can get what you need there.
