How to find the best campground is a great question when camping season is just around the corner. The excitement that builds from starting to plan a new trip is reason to celebrate. With so many places to see and explore across the country, it’s easy to get caught daydreaming of all the amazing locations that are possible destinations. RV camping is one of those endeavors that never gets old, there’s far too many places to roam and new adventures to pursue when all you need to do is load up the rig and hit the road. It’s a truly unique and amazing way to travel and, even more, a great way to camp.
All of this excitement commands the need to make a few big decisions. The most important one being where exactly should you point the ship and head out to go camping?! Sometimes this decision is pretty straightforward if you have a destination in mind or have been planning for months. Other times it’s as hard as can be – with so many potential and amazing locations out there, how on earth can you choose just one…? Here is an inside look at how to choose an amazing RV camping location so you can push the pedal to the floor and get rolling.
Take Advantage of Trip Planning Resources
There are some really good trip planning resources available for RV camping out there. If you are having a tough time deciding where to take your RV for some amazing nights under the stars, these resources can really help to point you in the right direction.
MobileRVing.com is one of the best sites around to facilitate your next RV camping trip. They specialize in all things RV camping and I now use the site as a starting point for almost all of my trips, whether scheming up ideas or completing full-fledged trip planning. The resources available at MobileRVing can easily help you find amazing campgrounds, plan a route, and provide lists of local businesses and things to do in the area or region you are planning on camping in or around. The main page has some awesome search features that let you hunt for RV camp sites all over the world. Simply enter the area you are hoping to explore and from there you can customize even further with the type of campground you are looking for and any desired amenities. Their website has a whole bunch of other RV related resources that a whole post (or three!) could be written about but it’s highly recommended to take advantage of the camping trip planning features they offer before you head out.
The U.S. Nation Forest Campground Guide is another great resource to help you plan your next RV camping trip. While not specific just to RV camping, this website is great at highlighting most of the amazing national forest lands across the country. They offer a state by state breakdown of all the campground options available and then will show how many RV sites are available at each and what hookups and amenities are available. Other information including trail listings, costs, reservations, fishing and many other relevant tidbits are also available. A great resource to help you take advantage of RV camping in the 154 national forests.
Make a List to Narrow the Search
If you are really unsure of where to head on your next RV camping trip, it helps quite a bit to make a list of your wants and needs for the potential adventure. Would you like to visit the mountains, the desert, or the beach? Do you want to only drive a few hours from home or are you up for a multi-day, thousands of miles push to reach a far off location? Do you want to head somewhere brand new or re-visit a location that you love? Maybe there is a world renown attraction (Grand Canyon, the Redwoods, the World’s Biggest Ball of Yarn) that you are dying to see. Or perhaps there are still some states you have never visited and want to knock them off of the list. Write down answers to all of these questions and it will give you an outline to start eliminating or adding possible destinations. You don’t need to list every possible element of a trip (although you might want to) but this process can really help to focus on any goals or desires attached to your camping trip.
Ask Other RVers Their Favorite Locations
Travelers love to share stories and those who travel by RV are no exception. If you have fellow RVers who are friends or friends of friends, reach out to them and ask where are some of the best locations they have ever visited. Each experience is obviously different but this sort of insider knowledge can prove highly valuable or provide a lead that isn’t available through other means. RV forums are another great resource to network with like-minded people and ask any sort of question you might have. Some resources and forums to take advantage of: The RV Bunch, MobileRVing, IRV2, RV.net, and RVforum.net. Most people that interact on these forums are eager to share knowledge and stories so take advantage of that good nature to help uncover some hidden camping gems!
At the end of the day, it’s hard to go wrong with any RV camping trip. Even if you only travel an hour or two away from your home, there is almost always fun to be had and memories to be made. Far away destinations can turn into unreal and unforgettable experiences but so can a night under the stars in your nearest state park or KOA campground. No one destination is better than another and the real joy comes from the journey itself. RV camping is always an amazing experience and if you are one of the lucky people who get to experience it often, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The only surefire way to find an amazing RV camping location is to get out there and explore!

I am looking for a year round campground that is chemical free - no lawn care with cutting only and no mosquito spraying. We are long time campers with an almost 32 foot rv and need a full hook up on site. We are super excited to start a new chapter in our lives and are praying for the right place and meeting amazing new friends. Everyone please stay safe and have a blessed day.
