How the RVing Lifestyle Has Changed Us
Leaving the stationary lifestyle and moving into an RV has had quite an effect on many aspects of our life. There are times that my wife and I will talk about the last three years of our lives and remember the good times as well as the bad. We always come to the same conclusion: we are glad we did it! We also recognize that, at this point, we are not exactly the same people we were when we started.

We have more friends.

It may seem to some that the RV lifestyle is a lonely one. It can be if you want it to be, but as workampers, we find that meeting new people and making friends is inevitable. We can now say that we have friends all over the country, many of which we are in contact with on Facebook. Not only do we have more friends, we seem to have a much wider variety of friends from various backgrounds. This, I think, has helped us appreciate the diversity in our country.

We don’t like accumulating things as much.

When we first got our house in Las Vegas, our task was to accumulate things to fill it. There was always an endeavor to get more stuff. Since spending three years in an RV, we are always trying to get rid of more stuff. There is nothing like living in a small crowded space that will quickly tell you what is necessary and what is not.

This one probably applies to me more than Natalie. I always found a way to get more stuff in the house, but living in the RV has made me get rid of many things that I normally wouldn’t. We have discovered the act of minimizing to be positive and quite freeing.

We don’t want a house without wheels.

We have been asked many times how long we think we will be in an RV. I usually respond by explaining that I couldn't imagine having a house without wheels anytime soon. When we first started this journey, it was crazy, stressful, and possibly insurmountable. We had no idea where we would end up or whether we could keep doing it.

Three years later, we couldn’t imagine having a home we couldn’t drive around. There is great comfort in having the familiar to live in even though the backyard changes. Furthermore, we have come to not fear the constant change but to look forward to it. Not knowing what’s around the riverbend has become not what keeps us up at night but what we get up in the morning to discover.

We are not totally different.

We are not unrecognizable from who we were when we started. We are still mostly the same. However, all of these small changes have added up to noticeable change. Overall, we feel that jumping in and following our dream has allowed us to grow as a couple and individuals. We once feared change, held onto every possession, and stayed to ourselves. We now not only constantly meet new friends, but we have learned to replace the stuff in our house with the experiences we cherish. That dreadful change and unknown is all part of the adventure we now call our life.
