Getting Ready for Alaska
So we continue to get ready for Alaska. Some of the items to get settled are:
  1. shipping Jim's gun up
  2. cleaning out the freezer of all chicken (just banned)
  3. calling the credit card companies
  4. adding some minutes for using in Canada
  5. finding a "bra" for the jeep to protect it from rocks
  6. filling out the paperwork for our rifle
  7. getting the batteries changed on our TPS system
  8. mapping the route up
We went back and forth about storing the gun but since we enjoy hiking and now biking we felt that we needed the extra protection from bears plus storing is not as easy as expected. If you leave the gun at a shop they must log it in and since we are not citizens of Montana we would not be able to get the gun back out so that is not an option. Some people had suggested using a locker at the greyhound station and that is probably an acceptable choice but it makes us nervous so in the end we found a shop in Tok (pronounced Toak) that will accept a box with our guns and let us pick it up while passing through, then on the return trip we will ship it back to a shop in Butte.

I also just learned that you can not bring eggs, fruit, or any type of uncooked chicken across the Canadian border. For us this poses a couple of issues. We feed our dogs raw food that is mainly chicken based as those bones are the easiest to grind up. The crossing into Canada is going to take us at least a week so we are trying to decide what to do about food for the dogs. We don't want to make any drastic changes and have sick pups while going through another country.

We also need to make a few last repairs to the rig as it is always a work in progress. When we arrived at Keyhole State Park we found that our main slide out would not go out. At first we thought we might have burnt up a motor but thanks to the wonderful world of YouTube we were able to diagnose the problem as a bad controller. It turns out that the designers of our couch felt it was a good idea to place the controllers and the inverter in the bay right behind the rear tires.

Over time the seals around the door have shrunk and since we hit some really wet weather on the way up that transferred into the compartment and shorted the controller. I was able to find them online and ordered them to be shipped to Devils Tower so we can replace before heading North. We were also able to switch the wires over to the controller for the rear slide out so we could get the main slide out. It is amazing how much Jim has learned about repairing our coach in just a year. We have also scheduled the rig for an oil change, transmission service, and generator service the day before we head to Canada.

I have routed our trip and from the time we leave Devils Tower KOA up to Alaska and back we will have added close to 7,000 miles to the rig plus mileage on the jeep for all of the driving around while in Alaska. Every night we look at pictures and read other blogs on those who have been and get more excited. We plan on fishing for halibut in Homer, trout in Soldotna, salmon fishing will depend on when season opens, and if we are lucky we hope to hunt for deer outside of Valdez as we both love venison.

My goal is to write daily of the drive through Canada and then once we get into Alaska I will post everything unless we find some good free wi-fi on the route. We are using the Milepost to plan the trip and it is very helpful but I would love something with more "through my eyes" reading to know what to expect and hopefully I will be able to share that for others who will come after.

I have to turn in now as in just a few hours we are going to go riding out to check on some 750 yearling cattle in the Wyoming hills.
