Gun ownership is a hot topic in today's politicized society. I feel it is therefore my duty in writing about this subject to declare my intention upfront. I am in no way speaking for or against the ownership of guns. The intent of the following article is written for those who are still trying to decide if they should get one for personal safety or not. Lastly, this is definitely my opinion and not based solely on facts, so I am not trying to tell anyone what they should do. Rather, I am giving my two cents to assist with those making a decision.
If a gun is not declared and found, there could be consequences, the least of which would be denied entry to Canada. To take a rig to Alaska, Canada is the only way through via roads. There are three choices when it comes to handguns in a rig and traveling to Alaska. Sell them or store them with family, friends, or a safety deposit box of some sort. You can also ship them to a gun dealer in Alaska in order to pick them up when you arrive.
Keep in mind that different locations have different gun laws. Respect the local laws where you travel. Some people simply don’t care for guns and don’t want bother with travel restrictions and various laws. If you are of the first crowd, find a gun you are going to feel comfortable learning to use and (most importantly) take safety and gun handling courses.
Two Types of Gun Owners
There are people who enjoy guns as a hobby. They collect various guns and go to firing ranges on their days off. If you are one of those people, then it is a given that you will probably bring some of those guns with you on the road. The other type of person either has one gun that they rarely use or are thinking of getting one when they go on the road for safety. If you are of the second group, there are some pros and cons to carrying a gun in your rig.Safety
Many people carry a gun because it makes them feel safer. They would rather have one and not use it than need one and not have it. Generally, a gun for this purpose spends most of its time locked up in the rig somewhere.Gun Laws
Many states have different storage laws for guns in vehicles and RVs. Some states require the gun to be kept in the trunk; others require the ammo and the gun to be kept seperate if driving with one. To be on the safe side keep the gun separate from the ammo and locked up.Traveling to Canada
If you get a shotgun or a rifle, it may be possible to fill out a form and get a permit to take those guns through customs into Canada. If you have a handgun, however, you will not be able to take it into Canada. Customs officials can and have asked to board RVs to do a search before allowing parties into their country. If a gun is not declared and found, there could be consequences, the least of which would be denied entry to Canada. Conclusion
Having a gun for protection while traveling is by no means absolutely necessary. If having one is going to make the difference of feeling comfortable traveling to new places or not, then it is your right to carry one in the United States.Keep in mind that different locations have different gun laws.
