Exploring Regina, Saskatchewan

Regina, Saskatchewan was a beautiful Canadian city. When we arrived we were welcomed by the gorgeous Wascana Centre, a park with beautiful walkways around Wascana Lake connecting many magnificent buildings. Drawn in by the lovely park, I couldn’t resist a long run to stretch my legs and enjoy the calming atmosphere of the city lake. The place was alive with activity, with many other runners, bikers, and walkers of all ages enjoying this beautiful day. I ran by kayak rentals, playgrounds, art-like fountain structures, fancy cafes, and many flocks of geese. I was loving the vibe of this city and happy we had decided to visit.

After a quick rinse off in our tiny shower, I was ready to head out and see what we could find in this city. As usual, we really didn’t have a plan for the day but we had heard there was a farmer’s market happening that day that sounded like just our thing. So, we headed toward the city center and after some searching we found a parking spot we both felt was reasonably safe for the van and we made our way to the market.

Corbin and I love farmer’s markets. We often went to them back in our home city of Portland, Oregon. We just enjoy the fresh produce, the homemade treats, the usual artist or musician, and just the kinds of people who meander around. Regina’s farmer’s market was really something. Besides the usual produce and products available, there were booths selling homemade foods from all different kinds of cultures, and there were tables loaded with pickled everything, and the music was fantastic! We walked through and were tempted by so many drool-worthy options, but eventually we couldn’t resist the pierogies and kielbasa sausage being sold at the parked food truck. We sat down at a nearby table and enjoyed our lunch while listening to the Chilean live music band really jamming together.

Right next to the farmer’s market was a whole other row of different booths. These booths were for the Pride Parade happening that day as well. They offered rainbow pins and other kinds of embellishment symbols of support and celebration. We were excited to be in the city for this event, as neither one of us had been to a Pride Parade before.

We followed the colors of rainbow and sounds of celebration and eventually found our way to the parade. It was great seeing the floats of local businesses showing their support for the LGBTQ community. The parade was great fun, with so many people dressed up proudly, music blaring, and people dancing and marching along. We cheered along with the crowd and were lucky enough to get tossed some candy.

Regina seemed like a city that welcomed and appreciated all different kinds of people and we enjoyed the diversity we experienced while we were there. Heading out the next day we would be back in more rural environments for the rest of the week until we hit Winnipeg just in time to celebrate Canada Day!
