We had survived our first night in Glacier National Park, well more than survived, we had savored it. We went to bed with stars peering through our window and woke up to the sun shining through the trees. Enjoying a slow morning, Corbin cooked up some breakfast burritos for us and made me a cup of tea that I sipped while enjoying the beauty around us while curled up in our cozy bed.

Our adventure plan for the day was to take the scooter up the Going to the Sun Road as far as it was open at the time. We were kind of disappointed we couldn’t get all the way through as we had originally planned, but we had known that would be a possibility since it was still early in the summer. So, after breakfast we strapped on our helmets and tucked little Paris (our dog) into his carrier and we all headed off to ride one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
It was glorious. The sun was shining down on us and made Lake McDonald, stretching out for miles beside us, glitter like a lake full of diamonds. The sky was a deep shade of blue and the mountains and trees around us commanded a sense of awe. We felt completely free and alive.
We pulled off at a turnout and hiked down some stairs to witness the powerful gushing of the river that connects to the lake. It roared over rocks and created waterfalls along its path, mesmerizing us and the large crowd of people who had also pulled over to get a closer look.
This side of the road was open for about 16 miles, and we turned around when we got to the top. There were many hiking trails around we would have loved to explore, but we were informed no trails in Glacier allow dogs. So, we enjoyed what was available to us and experienced the views from below rather than at the mountain peaks. But, even still it was an incredible place to stay and we definitely plan to spend more time there in the future.
After our little joy ride, we made our way back to camp with the intention of attempting to do our first load of laundry. We had discovered the Scrubba Bag, which allowed us to do our laundry anywhere on the road where we had access to water. Laundry was one of my main concerns when planning to embark on this great adventure, I knew I didn’t want to spend a ton of time or money in laundromats. This little invention worked great for us! We used our environmentally safe soap to wash our clothes and then hung them up to dry in the mountain air. It was so nice to have all clean clothes again, and we hadn’t spent a penny.

We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, and when the sun began to set we hopped back on the scooter to find a spot to enjoy the sunset. The pale pinks and orange of the sunset were beautiful and reflected on the surface of Lake McDonald. We cuddled up and and took it in, feeling peaceful and content. We had really enjoyed Glacier, but tomorrow was time for a new adventure and we were set to head across the Canadian border for the first time.
