They might think the vehicle is too big or the thought of sleeping at a campground or RV park makes them shudder. It’s an experience not for the faint of heart but instead for those who have a steady sense of adventure and a yearn to explore. If that’s not your thing, no big deal. If you are on the fence about RVing, that is totally understandable. It is a commitment, to say the least. If you’re reading this, you are most likely leaning towards the possibility of buying or renting and RV and giving it a try. This blog won’t attempt to directly sway you towards going for it but the next sentence will. GO FOR IT! If you need some more convincing or are hung up on some common myths about RVs, let’s debunk those rumors in an effort to get your hands behind the wheel and set you free.
Myth #1 - RVs Are Too Big for the Average Person to Drive
RVs can indeed be quite large. But you can also get a pretty small one that is no larger than your average truck or passenger van. These more common size vehicles take extra effort and skill to safely navigate but many people of all different driving abilities operate them daily. Even the larger size RVs that are 30 feet in length or more can be successfully driven by just about anyone. You will want to pay attention to the road and put extra emphasis on safe driving habits, but RVs are really a pretty easy and enjoyable driving situation. They don’t go too fast and they don’t stop that quickly and once you get a feel for it, it’s kind of like driving a boat. Most are automatics similar to passenger vehicles and oftentimes are designed with driver comfort and ease in mind, making them highly functional in the cockpit or driver’s seat. Practice makes perfect, regardless of vehicle size and slow and steady are always the rules when at the wheel of an RV.
Myth #2 – RVs are Impossible to Park
Large RVs can be difficult to park and navigate. But impossible?! No way. I’ve parallel parked a 33’ RV on the busy streets of Manhattan and done the same on the narrow hills of San Francisco. I have years of experience behind the wheel, but you would be amazed at how they can maneuver once the intricacies of your rig are learned. Many large RVs are designed to be the length of two parking spots. Knowing this fact, if there are two spots in a row open, it’s possible to get it in there. You might need some practice but once you get the hang of it, parking your RV becomes a point of pride and enjoyment. Also, most modern RVs have backup cameras that will give you an added advantage when it comes to difficult parking situations and these can be a crucial tool in assisting with the task. If you do have passengers or a co-pilot, kindly instruct them of their duty to get out on the curb and help you navigate successfully. And don’t be too stubborn to ask for help!

Myth #3 – RVs are Dangerous
All vehicles are dangerous. Driving is one of the most dangerous things any of us do with our daily lives. You need to be cautious and always consider safety first when behind the wheel of any car or truck. With a larger vehicle that can cause more damage, this becomes even more important. RVs are not inherently any more dangerous than any other vehicle but they can be when out of control or driven improperly. RVs need to be driven safely, slowly, and with your full attention, just like any other vehicle.
Myth #4 – RVs are Too Expensive
RVs certainly can cost a pretty penny. But you can get your hands on a used one fairly cheaply or pay any amount in between the cheapest and the most expensive. Much like buying a house, RVs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes with varying amenities based on personal preference and desire. Some can cost millions while others only thousands. As long as you know what you are looking for and have some money for a budget, you can get the keys to your own RV. I would always recommend paying a bit more for something that is mechanically sound with no major issues, but if you have some mechanical skills you can always buy a clunker and fix it up. If you want to take out a second mortgage to afford a luxury motor home, by all means go for it! Those things are real nice. You don’t need to break the bank to get one however and there are many different options available for the average buyer.
