The RV lifestyle is not for everyone. Long hours behind the wheel and endless expanses of open road have an obvious allure to those of us who know the freedom and fun this allows. But others might not feel the same way or have restrictions or hang-ups towards RVs and RV life in general keeping them from ever pursuing the activity at all. If you have no interest at all in road trips all across the country and consistent exploration, no need to read any further. If you have a pull to learn more about what it takes to find an RV and hit the road, you’ve come to the right place.
Whether you are thinking about purchasing your first RV or are simply exploring the idea for the first time, there are several common barriers that most people come across when first exploring these thoughts. Let’s take a look at some of those and what you can do to push past them and get behind the wheel to feel the freedom and enjoyment that comes with life on the open road.
RVs Are Expensive!
You’re right, they are. A home on wheels can cost a pretty penny. But not everyone is going to need that top of the line 50-foot behemoth that costs more than the average house. If money is of no concern, then congratulations, you’ve already busted through hurdle number one to adopting the RV life. For the rest of you, RVs might not be expensive as you think and there are options out there to match just about any budget.
Most motor vehicles can be considered expensive and an RV is no exception. In fact, due to the larger size of these vehicles, they do usually cost more than your average passenger vehicle. But there are more affordable options out there if you know how to look for them and are willing to haggle. Used RVs are the perfect place to start for someone looking to get into the lifestyle for the first time while on a budget. Craiglist in your local area is a great resource that can give you a look into all of the used RVs available in your area as well as a ballpark ideas of what they might cost. When buying a used vehicle of any kind, it is always a good idea to have it checked out by a mechanic before committing to the sale. You might find a great deal on a used RV but if the motor doesn’t work, you’re not going to get very far.
Driving and RV is Difficult…
Driving any large vehicle requires extra care and attention. An extra-large vehicle like an RV can be really intimidating at first but once you get behind the wheel and if you are willing to take it easy and learn slowly, you will be surprised at how easy and fun it can be to actually drive and maneuver. I truly believe that anyone can drive and RV. The basics are the same as driving any other vehicle you just need to start hyper aware and play it extra safe.
It’s important to know that an RV will require extra time to accelerate and stop. This means that you should always give extra space to cars in front of you and never try to go too fast. An RV is not a racecar and slow and steady always wins the race when it comes to RV driving. You will want to ease into turns and always double check your mirrors before turning. Remember that the joy is in the journey when it comes to RV driving. Pay attention and enjoy the scenery all around you and you’ll find that after a few road trips, you’ll have the hang of driving the big rig in no time. Here are some good tips for new RV drivers that are worth learning before you get behind the wheel.
RV Maintenance is Complicated
As with any other vehicle, you need to properly care for and maintain it to ensure longevity and proper motor function over time. The difference with and RV is that you also have a variety of other systems that need maintenance and attention over time. It is, after all, a motor home, and being such has many of the same appliances and needs as your home. To get started, I would always recommend finding a good RV mechanic who can help you with basic and preventative maintenance and repairs as needed. Even if you are a good mechanic yourself, it’s always nice to have someone you can call with questions or advice in regards to your rig. At some point or another, you are going to experience mechanic issues with the engine or other critical driving parts of an RV so it’s good to have a trusted mechanic you know and have worked with to take care of things as they come up.
For the other systems on an RV, it pays to educate yourself on their features and functions. You will want to learn how your solar system charges your batteries. You need to know how to turn on and use your generator. You need to know where to fill up on LP gas to keep your fridge functioning. The water tanks, both fresh and black, you need to know how to clean them out, fill them up and properly dispose of waste. It may seem like a lot but all of these things are basic knowledge that you can easily figure out by watching YouTube videos or looking through the resources at MobileRVing.
The Barriers in Your Mind
All of these common barriers are really easy to break through. Will a little gumption and the desire to get out on the open road, you can start exploring the RV lifestyle today. It’s common to have some hangups with any new endeavor and it’s always good to do your research and plan things out before committing to an expensive and time consuming activity. RV life is one of a kind and if you are interested in what it takes, get out there and go for it!
