Celebrating Fall in an RV is such a great experience! Autumn is one of the very best seasons for camping. The crisp fall air, chilly nights around the fire, and gorgeous colorful leaves on the trees just make camping all the more fun.
Depending on where you travel, swimming may no longer be an option during fall camping trips, and many people won’t want to spend time out on the lake in a boat. This leaves many RVers wondering what they might do on an autumn camping adventure.
The answer? Plenty!
There are tons of awesome things to do when traveling by RV in the fall, and many of the options are excellent celebrations of the season. Ready to learn how to welcome fall while traveling in your RV this season? Read on!
The first and perhaps most obvious option is to have some classic camping fun. While you can’t swim and may not want to fish, there are plenty of other fabulous camping activities that tend to go hand-and-hand with the cooler fall weather.
Campfires are much more fun when it’s a bit chilly out and you can use the fire to get cozy. Meanwhile, enjoying a warm beverage such as hot cocoa or apple cider while munching on a s’more is the ultimate way to end any camping day.
Of course, we mustn’t forget the option of fall hikes. Hiking in the summer is great, but there is something about a fall hike—with its crisp yellow and orange leaves, busy squirrels and deer, and the lovely weather—that is absolutely irresistible.

Fall Foliage Drives
Speaking of those yellow and orange leaves, I highly recommend spending some time admiring the colors of fall through a fall foliage drive. Because you’ll be traveling in your RV, you have the option to visit any area of the country you wish, and this means it’s possible to head to the places with the very best fall foliage out there.
Here are some wonderful options:
-
Aspen, Colorado — If you’ll be headed out for your fall drive early in the season, this place is wonderful. Any later than early October though, and you might be disappointed.
-
The Catskills, New York — Offering viewing options a little later in the season, the Catskills are perfect for the October fall foliage chaser.
-
Great Smoky Mountains (North Carolina and Tennessee) — The best place to go for later-fall foliage viewing, the Great Smoky Mountains are absolutely breathtaking throughout October and November.
-
Columbus River Gorge, Oregon — Heading northwest? Columbus River Gorge in Oregon is a great place to see some colorful leaves.
-
Upper Peninsula, Michigan — No matter what time of year you visit, the Upper Peninsula is gorgeous. That said, fall is quite possibly the most beautiful time of all to see this lovely place.
Be sure to look for the best campgrounds near you in all of the above locations, right here on MobileRVing.com.
Haunted Houses
If the spooky side of the fall season is what piques your interest, you might prefer to use your home-on-wheels to travel to some of the country’s best haunted houses. While many of these creepy places are open year-round, there’s no denying the fact that haunted houses are best during the fall when the air is crisp and the ghosts are out haunting.
Below are the scariest haunted houses in the country:
-
Netherworld — Stone Mountain, Georgia
-
Eastern State Penitentiary: Terror Behind the Walls — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
-
Kersey Valley Spookywoods — Archdale, North Carolina
-
The 13th Gate — Baton Rouge, Louisiana
-
Basement of the Dead — Aurora, Illinois
-
Asylum 49 — Tooele, Utah
-
Dent School House — Cincinnati, Ohio
-
Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Houses — Ulster Park, New York
-
Erebus — Pontiac, Michigan

Campground Celebrations
As a much less terrifying and much more kid-friendly option, you could always look into what various campgrounds will be doing to celebrate Halloween and the fall season.
Many campgrounds—especially family-friendly ones—host trick-or-treat events, Halloween parties, haunted houses, corn mazes, hayrides, and more during the fall season. These in-campground events are absolutely perfect for a couple of reasons:
-
For starters, they tend to be free or very low cost, meaning you can have an absolute blast without breaking the bank.
-
The fact that you get to stay within the campground is also a major bonus if you’re just looking to relax for the weekend.
Want to find fall fun in a campground near you? I recommend calling around to find out what each camping resort in your area is planning to offer and when. This will help you better plan your autumn getaway.
Last but not least, we simply must mention fall-time harvest adventures. We all know that autumn is the season of apples and pumpkins, and most of us adults have been to a pumpkin patch or apple orchard at least once in our lives. However, not every child has had the chance to experience the magic of a fall produce-picking experience.
Why not plan your fall RV adventures around a really great apple orchard or pumpkin patch? Many of these farms offer special entertainment and activities throughout the fall season, meaning your visit will be even more exciting! Look for places that offer corn mazes, pony rides, hayrides, and live entertainment so you can stay for a few hours and be thoroughly entertained.
Some of our favorite options include:
-
Carter Mountain Orchard in Virginia
-
Eckert’s Country Store and Farms in Illinois
-
Willowbrook Apple Farm in California
-
Roba Family Farm in Pennsylvania
-
Roloff Farms in Oregon
-
Jumbo’s Pumpkin Patch in Maryland
Another fabulous harvest adventure option is to invest in a Harvest Hosts membership and actually camp on a farm. Many of these farm camping experiences include a chance to help around the farm, something every family is sure to enjoy.
As you can see, there are tons of amazing ways to celebrate fall during your RV adventures. What do you say? Why not wait a few extra weeks to put the RV in storage and squeeze a bit more camping fun out of this year?
