Camping in the rain can be more fun than you might expect! This year has been the rainiest year but despite all the rain we still like to camp. Some of my fondest memories are camping in the rain. I get asked the same question a lot; the weatherman is calling for forty percent chance of rain every day this week should we cancel or go camping? My response is go camping. The next question is always well what do we do if it rains? You can do a lot while camping in the rain. In this article we will list things you can do camping in the rain.
The obvious go to is watching movies in your RV or playing on our cell phones. I like to be more creative and here are some ideas:
Outdoor Fun Area
Create an outdoor area. Just because it is raining does not mean you have to retreat indoors. Lay down a waterproof rug like the water resistant reversable mats, throw up a few tarps and lights and you’ve got an outdoor fun area. Tell ghost stories, reminisce about the past, throw back a few beers and enjoy the night.
Campfire Challenge
If you are a person who enjoys a challenge and you know the rain is moving in, you can challenge yourself or your neighbor to a campfire dual. Get the campfire started before the rain hits and see who can keep their fire going during the rainstorm. Here is a hint use a fire starter and keep the larger logs on top but enough oxygen to keep it going. You can also bide your time by making fire starters during a rainy day for future use.
Music
Let the music take over. Break out the harmonicas, karaoke machine, banjos and guitars. Beautiful music can be made and Digital Trends list twenty-five best songs about rain. Singing in The Rain by Gene Kelly is one of my favorite songs; singing in the rain with a smile on my face, dancing in the rain, singing and dancing in the rain. Singing in The Rain is a 1952 classic.

Games
How about something with a twist like the game twister? Of course, this will depend on how much RV space you have. The outdoor fun area is an option with twister. For some of us not so limber folks you could leave this game to the more flexible or at the very least give it a try. You could also play bean bag twister. No twisting involved the bags do all the work. There are many indoor activities like chair bingo, tic tac toe toss, and chair golf.

Crafts
Bring on the creativity and break out the crayons, glue, paints, and construction paper. You can make DIY camo toilet paper tube camping binoculars. Then when the rain clears you can go bird watching. You could create puppets from old socks, paper bags or old rags and have a puppet show. For those of us who are a little more artistically talented here is a video with twenty-one inspiring crafts. While some may involve an oven there are plenty of other options in this video. One of my favorite crafts is taking a family photo and cutting the faces out and gluing them to a stone to make a magnet for the fridge. This is a simple project found in the video.

Cardboard Ideas/Miscellaneous Creations
It is off to the races with this one; cardboard race cars. If you have access to other supplies and a creative mind you can use other supplies to make race cars. One thing I remember when my children were young, we had pinewood derby races. What a great time it was. You can buy kits at your local 4-H office and local craft stores. Other cardboard ideas are forts and castles. You could use this as learning time as well and build a post office, grocery store or library. If cardboard is not an option, we always made forts with blankets and sheets. Check out this DIY video on how to build an easy tent fort that can be done in your RV.
Adult Activities
If you don’t have any kids at home anymore and you are on an adult only camping trip and it is raining here are some ideas for you. Build and play the game called Sequence. My husband recently made one for us. It can be played with 2 or 4 players; played singly or as a team. All it takes is three decks of cards. One deck to make the board and two decks to play. You will need poker chips of different colors one set per person and a piece of cardboard large enough to make the game. You will also need glue. We used Mod Podge on our board, and it worked great but be sure to let it dry for twenty-four hours. There are always drinking games too but play responsibly and abide by campground rules. There are many games for adults that we have learned in our travels such as Hand and Foot, Skip-Bo, Pegs and Jokers, and Mexican Train. I have discovered that each State has its preference of what game is played and how it is played.
Conclusion
There are numerous options for entertainment when rain threatens when it comes to what to do when at camp and it rains. Do not let a chance for rain ruin your camping trip. Do be cautious, alert and take precautions because storms do happen. If you run out of ideas there is always movies, phones and just kicking back with a good book for some down time.
