Blackstone griddles are so handy for the avid Rver or camper! Cooking in the great outdoors is one of the time-honored traditions of campers and RVers everywhere—and for good reason.
For one thing, making a meal inside such a small space can very quickly make the place feel too hot, even if you've got the A/C running on full blast. For another, it's simply a special experience that can bring people together to create memories and bond over delicious food in much the same way our ancestors did thousands of years ago.
Here's the thing though: Do you really want to trust your family's meal to be cooked on that corroded old grill on your campsite that's been rusting in the elements and likely improperly cleaned for who knows how long? No way, right?
What if I told you there was a better way? Allow me to introduce you to a little company called Blackstone, which offers a line of outdoor griddles for all your campsite and RV cooking needs.
Now, Blackstone is not nearly the only company around that makes camp-friendly griddles. However, there's a reason you'll hear their name brought up again and again in RVing circles: These griddles are simply the best ones around.
For starters, they're designed and engineered from solid rolled steel right here in the USA, driven by the expertise and craftsmanship of a bunch of outdoor enthusiasts who know how important it is to get this stuff right.
I dare you to find a griddle that heats as evenly, cooks more efficiently, is just as easy to clean up afterward, and offers the same level of innovation and care as Blackstone's products.
Even if you somehow manage to come away with a bad taste in your mouth (figuratively speaking, of course) about these griddles, Blackstone offers a generous one-year warranty that covers all parts, workmanship, and finishes. If your griddle arrives with any defects, the company has a reputation of being great to work with to get those kinds of things resolved.
Which Blackstone-Brand Products are Best for RVers?
At this point you're probably wondering which of Blackstone's griddles are right for your particular RVing situation. Not to worry, they've got a product in their lineup that will suit your needs perfectly, no matter how large or small your rig is or how many people you need to cook for.
Starting at the smaller end of things, Blackstone's 17" portable tabletop griddle is the ideal model for tiny living spaces. Though it's the smallest and most intimate model of the bunch, it still gives you a surprisingly ample surface for cooking burgers, pancakes, veggies, steaks, hash browns, and more.
To clean it off after cooking, all you have to do is wipe the surface down with a paper towel, pull out and empty the grease trap drawer underneath, and flip the griddle top upside down for easy storage. Just be sure to pick up some extra 1-pound propane bottles so you don't have to worry about running out during your next adventure.
For the Big Family in a Small Space
Need a step up from the 17-inch model? Blackstone offers a similarly portable 22-inch version that has two burners instead of one and offers 330 square inches of cooking space. The burners can be controlled independently, giving you adjustable heat zones for cooking different kinds of things at once without burning one or the other.
For Those Who Go Big or Go Home
Now we come to the big daddy of the lineup, the one that started it all: the 36-inch, four-burner griddle station, which fits up to 28 burgers!
This is Blackstone's cornerstone product, first released back in 2005 but with some more recent modifications. Namely, they switched from a front-facing grease management system to a rear-facing one, so you can push that piping hot grease AWAY from you rather than pulling it TOWARD you. I'd have to agree that's a smart move by Blackstone.
They also improved the right-side accessory shelf from the old version, adding a removable cutting board, a paper towel holder, and garbage bag hooks beneath the cutting board insert.
Note: They offer an awesome-looking stainless steel edition of the 36-inch griddle, but as of this writing, the cooktop does not yet have the rear grease trap. They're working on it though, so stay tuned!
Caring for Your Blackstone Product
Blackstone griddles can last you a lifetime if you care for them properly. Here are some resources on how to do that, direct from the company.
Similarly to cast iron cookware, you'll have to season your griddle with cooking oil in order to create a natural nonstick surface that lets foods slide around with ease and adds flavor to whatever you cook on it. For your convenience, Blackstone has created a complete guide to seasoning your griddle from start to finish, with photos and a video to help you along.
Of course, seasoning the griddle isn't the only thing you'll have to stay on top of. You'll also want to keep it clean between uses, which is easy enough to do as long as you follow a few simple steps:
-
Let the griddle cool down until it’s merely warm instead of hot.
-
Scrape the surface with a metal spatula (or similar tool).
-
Wipe the surface down with a paper towel.
-
While it's still warm, pour some plain water (no soap!) and gently rub a nylon scouring pad on the surface to dislodge any gunk. If you want to do things restaurant-style, you can use a simple squirt bottle for the water.
-
Rinse off the dirty water and use a cloth to gently dry the surface.
That's it! And once you're done cleaning the surface, you can rub it with some oil to keep that seasoning going strong and rust-free. Then, store the griddle somewhere cool and dry.
Hopefully this guide helps you find the RV griddle of your dreams. We hope you use it to create memories with friends and loved ones for many years to come.
