The best campgrounds to spend Halloween may be closer than you think! Autumn is a great time of year to travel. Leaves are changing from their summer greens to vibrant reds and yellows, crisp mornings lead to beautiful afternoon skies, and the highways and roads seem to slow down a bit. For us RVers, October can be one of the best times to get out and go camping. Winter hasn’t quite arrived so that means, depending on where you travel, some great nights under the stars that aren’t yet too cold. After the summer season ends, the crowds at many campgrounds die down as well making for plenty of campgrounds to choose from and plenty of sites to park your rig and enjoy the stay.
Another reason this time of year is a great time for an RV trip is Halloween. It’s one of my personal favorite holidays and when you get out on the open road in the weeks leading up to this spooky celebration, you get the chance to see all of the seasonal decorations, haunted houses, and even graveyards that seem to creep up everywhere. It’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of the season and who knows, you might even feel like driving your RV around decked out in a full costume. If you’re on the fence about an RV adventure this time of year, you won’t be disappointed if you choose to pack up and head out. Here is a look at some of the best campgrounds out there to spend the Halloween season.
Lake Rudolph, Santa Clause, Indiana
Don’t let the name of the town this RV campground is located in fool you, Lake Rudolph in Santa Clause, Indiana is a great location to spend Halloween. This is an awesome RV park at almost any time of the year but they really turn on the spook factor around Halloween. For seven weekends in a row running from mid-September to the end of October, there are Halloween celebrations. That’s right, seven weeks of Halloween! The festivities during these celebrations are full of fun and provide various entertainment and activities to keep the entire family happy (or scared!). There is a haunted hayride that everyone can enjoy, ghost stories told around the campfire, and trick or treating from RV to RV is always an option to fill the kids’ bags with precious candy. Campers here really go for it and you will find different sites decorated with all of the ghosts and ghouls you would expect only at an actual haunted house.
Green Acres Family Campground, Williamston, North Carolina.
Some of my favorite Halloweens have been spent in the southern portion of the United States. There is just something inherently spooky about the south this time of year and Green Acres Family Campground is a great place to get into the feeling of Halloween in the south. This campground has been in operation since the mid 1960’s and is a popular campground and RV park at any time of the year. Green Acres puts on a pretty amazing Halloween the last two weekends of every October and the entire campground is transformed into an extravaganza to celebrate the holiday in style. There is an annual parade that takes place on the actual day of Halloween each year that is not to be missed and you will find nearly every campsite decorated if you do visit so be sure to bring all the necessary materials so you can get in on the fun. Kids can enjoy jack-o-lantern contests, sack races and a pumpkin roll. There is also trick or treating around the grounds and even a haunted corn field to explore!
Land-O-Pines Family Campground – Covington, Louisiana
Like I said before, the south is a great place to spend Halloween and Louisiana might just be the best state in the country to spend this holiday. It seems like there’s always a party in this state and Halloween is another festive holiday that they take full advantage of here. Land-O-Pines Family Campground near Covington is a magical place to spend the end of October. The Halloween celebration lasts for weeks here and is full of many different activities that bring fun, excitement, and spooks to the season. Things kick off with a Zombie Apocalypse and Zombie costume contest where people really go all out to look like the undead. The zombie activities continue with a zombie themed obstacle course and this all happens on the first weekend! You can expect campsites to be fully decorated here and the trick or treating to be out of this world. Another highlight and local favorite here is the Great Pumpkin Race which involves campground contestants creating wheeled carts that they then place a pumpkin in and race the homemade contraptions down a hill. Land-O-Pines is a certain delight around Halloween and is worth a trip to Louisiana.
Canton/East Sparta KOA, East Sparta, Ohio
Yet another great RV destination to spend Halloween is the Canton/East Sparta KOA in East Sparta, Ohio. This is a popular RV campground most times of the year with horseback riding, an 18-hole mini golf course, and lake for visitors to enjoy. The Halloween season brings out another element to the place and is a solid choice if you’re looking to get a taste of the season from the comforts of your RV. It is a more traditional Halloween experience here than some other campgrounds but that makes for a memorable and enjoyable time for everyone. There is a campsite decorating contest so be sure to bring all of your props and skeletons from home. The big event here is an annual potluck on Halloween night where the entire campground and plenty of locals come out to enjoy the night. In addition to the great food being served there is a costume contest and pumpkin carving contest where those who are really on top of their Halloween skills get the chance to be recognized. You might not see as many zombie activities here, but it sure is a great place to spend Halloween.
