Best Historical Sites for RVers with Camping Nearby

One of the most alluring aspects to adopting the RV lifestyle is the fact that you get to see so many different parts of the country or world. With such a vast system of interstates and roads scattered across the US, there are almost endless attractions to visit. And your RV is a great way to experience many of these attractions whether they are well known or more off of the beaten path. From serene spots far away from civilization to the world’s largest ball of yarn, there are places out there to match the interests of almost anyone. Here we will look at some of the best historical sites for RVers around the US, so for any history buffs out there, use this a guide to get in touch with a storied past or teach the family about what the important places near or far from home.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is often associated with parties and parades and many visit the city to enjoy the nightlife of the French Quarter and Bourbon street, in particular. But the city is a great destination for any fans of history out there and offers much more culture than simply drinking in the streets. Well known for its vibrant blend of cultures and cuisines, New Orleans is an inviting location that is unique in spirit and in history.

The historical importance of this place stems from it being along the banks of the Mississippi river and the Gulf of Mexico, making it a key port and trade center for much of its existence. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 made the region a part of the growing United States but the city existed even before that date. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is the oldest Catholic church in the country and has been existence since the early 1700s. The museum of New Orleans are also well worth checking out with the New Orleans Jazz National Park and the Historic New Orleans Collection being two recommended favorites.

A few RV friendly campgrounds to make a base camp while you explore the rich history of this city are the French Quarter RV Resort and Pontchartrain Landing.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Another great RV destination with a solid and storied historical past is Santa Fe, New Mexico. Anyone who visits this city is sure to feel its age as the main square in the city center still appears much as it did hundreds of years ago. Santa Fe is the oldest capitol city in the country and was established by Spanish explorers and missionaries in 1610. The region is the pinnacle of the Southwest for many people and it is a beautiful and enjoyable destination for any RVer. In the 1800s, the city was a major stop of the Santa Fe trail with ambitious pioneers exploring and settling the still wild west. To this day, it still has a unique feel that makes it appealing for locals and visitors alike.

For some great historical sites check out the Museum of New Mexico and the Palace of the Governors in the heart of the city. The main plaza hosts markets and events almost all year round where you can find Native American jewelry and purchase wares much in the same manner as it has been done for centuries. There are 46 national historic landmarks in all of New Mexico so there are ample places to explore in and around the city itself.

Some recommended RV campgrounds in the area include the Stagecoach Stop RV Park and the Monte Verde RV Park.

Washington, D.C.

For US history buffs, it doesn’t get much better than where it all began in Washington, D.C. You might not think of a major metropolitan area as a great RV destination but if history is a main reason for your RV adventures, Washington has a vast amount of historical sites, museums, and other attractions and most of them are free of charge. The National Mall is always worth walking down and sites such as the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial are well known but more than worth seeing for yourself in person.

The National Museum of American History is a must see for anyone, and especially with those with a love of history. Another recommended museum is the National Museum of the American Indian. There are enough museums in D.C. to easily keep the entire family occupied for a week or more so it’s really easy to find something that will interest young and old alike. Just walking through all of the parks and memorials in D.C. will give you a historical feeling that is sure to spark interest and excitement for times gone by.

Check out Cherry Hill Park for some nearby RV amenities.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park should be on every RVers list whether they are fans of history or not. This place is truly wonderful and unique and upon your arrival, you will easily see why it is considered a national treasure. This is an RV destination for many so you may encounter crowds if you go during busy summer months but the wild natural setting you will find yourself surrounded by will more than make up for any traffic you meet upon entry.

From the well-known sites like Old Faithful to more ambitious adventures into the backcountry, Yellowstone holds an important place in American history. It can feel like a glimpse into a time when the country was wilder and offers visitors a taste of the rugged terrain that early Americans encountered as they began to explore and settle the west. You can easily go on a driving tour of the park from the comforts of your own RV or camp at one of the many options and set off on hikes or day trips to satisfy your inner-explorer. Yellowstone is truly a natural wonder but also holds a place in the American spirit that every RVer should experience.
