Baking in an RV Oven

Some of the appliances found in an RV can be tricky to use. The refrigerator, for instance, can be quite persnickety. Another difficult one is the RV oven. These buggers are so tricky to get the hang of that many people avoid using them altogether.
However, there is no reason you need to avoid using yours. The tips below will have you using your RV oven to cook like a professional chef in no time at all.
Use a Thermometer
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that the temperature in an RV oven likely won't match the temperature you set on the dial. Obviously, this can negatively impact the way the oven cooks.
By using a thermometer inside of the oven, you can ensure you are baking at the correct temperature every time. This alone will make your baking ventures more successful.
Turn the Pan
Let’s face it, RV ovens aren’t the best quality. For this reason, they don't do so great at evenly distributing heat. This often leads to burning one part of a baked good. To remedy this, try turning the pan halfway through cooking. This will help distribute the heat more evenly, leading to a more evenly cooked item.
Invest in a Pizza Stone
The flame in an RV oven is located in the middle of the appliance. Because of this, and because the oven is so small, the heat from the oven fire has been known to burn the bottoms of pizzas, cakes, and casseroles.
Fortunately, this can be fixed fairly quickly and easily by placing a pizza stone on the flat metal surface (not the rack!) directly above the flame. This helps distribute the heat across the entire bottom of the dish, helping to avoid that burning in the middle.
Adjust the Rack
If you find the bottoms of your baked goods cook much faster than the tops, it’s likely that your oven rack needs to be moved up. While there isn’t a lot of room for adjustment in an RV oven, even a small change can make a big difference when it comes to baking. Therefore, I recommend giving this easy fix a try.
Be Still
Travel trailers, fifth-wheels, and motorhomes all have a similar problem: They shake.
Unfortunately, too much shaking leads to fallen cakes and flat baked goods. Therefore, you should do your best to avoid shaking your RV while baking. Head outside or put on a movie, sit still, and be rewarded with fluffy baked goods straight from your RV oven.
I hope these tips help you find success in your RV baking endeavors. After all, we all deserve to have your cake and eat it too, even if we happen to be on a camping trip when the craving strikes.

Great tips! Thank you, Chelsea. We have a “half-time” oven. It’s part electric convection oven and part microwave. We have had a difficult time getting the right temperature and time when we cook with it - especially when baking. The first time we used the half-time feature, we even got sparks coming from inside the oven. Although we solved that problem we still can’t get foods to cook properly with the half-time or convection feature. We usually just give up and only use it as a microwave when we can. Do you have any tips for half-time and/or convection oven users?
