Houston, Texas should be on your travel list! Whether you’re looking for a vacation or the next stop in your full-time RV adventures, Houston is a fabulous destination. There is much to see and do in this city, including some really amazing museums and fantastic food joints.
Best of all, it’s all relatively affordable, something all RVers will welcome with open arms.
That said, with so much to see and do, Houston can be a bit overwhelming for some. Lucky for you, my family and I have visited on multiple occasions and can definitely say we know the ins and outs of touring the place. Therefore, we are going to use our experiences to compile the ultimate guide to Houston for RVers. One read through this article, and you’ll know where to stay, what to see, and which places to pop in for a bite to eat or a fabulous cup of joe.
Let’s begin!
First, you will need to find a place to park your RV while you explore. Fortunately, there is no shortage of great RV parks in the Houston area, meaning you should be able to find something to your liking fairly easily.
Here are some of our favorites:
The perfect park for those who like to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle, South Main RV Park is super convenient to all the fun Houston has to offer. Whether you plan on a short stay or a long one, the staff will be happy to accommodate you with a clean place to stay in a fabulous location.
Prefer to be out away from the busyness of the city? Why not head north into Conroe? Summer Breeze USA in Conroe is the perfect place to go for rest and relaxation while still staying within reasonable driving distance of Houston. The amenities here are awesome, as are the people!
Another beautiful and relaxing park located north of the city, Woodland Lakes RV Park is a great place to park your rig. The staff and residents are friendly and welcoming, and the lovely landscaping promotes a laid-back state of mind.
Once your RV is safely parked, you’ll want to head out on some adventures. As mentioned before, there is plenty to do in this city. All you have to do is narrow down your choices.
Below we’ve listed a few of our favorites, who they might be best for, and some ways to save money when you visit.
If you have young kids in tow, you simply have to check out the Children's Museum of Houston. This awesome museum is definitely one of the best of its kind, and it’s part of both the AZA and ASTC reciprocal programs, meaning you can save money on admission if you happen to be a part of either program.
Houston Museum of Natural Science
Often touted as one of the best natural science museums in the country, Houston Museum of Natural Science is a super interesting and engaging place for adults and children alike. Want to save on admission? Visit on a Thursday night from 6pm–9pm to get in for free, but be prepared to pay $20 to park.
Outer space lovers will adore Space Center Houston. This amazing museum is owned and operated by NASA, so of course it’s awesome. Here you can see actual spacecrafts up close, meet real astronauts, tour NASA facilities, and play with simulators to your heart’s content.
This is part of the ASTC reciprocal program as well.
Anyone who enjoys boardwalk games and rides will adore Kemah. This adorable area features a wide variety of super fun attractions that families and teenagers will love. Be sure to eat in one of the many Boardwalk restaurants while you’re there, and stay until dark in order to experience the lovely lights.
People of all ages will love the Houston Zoo. This zoo may not be the biggest around, but it’s plenty big enough and incredibly well-kept to boot. We recommend visiting in the spring or fall rather than the cold winters or ridiculously hot summers, and be sure to use your AZA reciprocal membership if you have one.
Last but not least, we simply must discuss food. After all, you do have to eat, and you might as well eat well, especially when surrounded by nearly limitless choices.
Yes, there are plenty of chains in Houston. In fact, you can probably find any chain restaurant imaginable. However, the things we’ve chosen are delicious, locally owned places you won’t be able to find anywhere else.
Local Foods is a local chain that serves...you guessed it: local foods. This is a seriously cool concept and makes it one of the most eco-friendly restaurants around. On top of that, this is also one of the tastiest restaurants around and is well loved by locals.
There are several throughout the city, so you’re sure to be near one at some point. Drop in and try it for yourself!
Torchy’s Tacos
Mexican food is a must when you’re this far south in Texas. Fortunately, Houston does not disappoint on the Mexican food front. Torchy’s Tacos is one of many local taquerias, and we are convinced it is the best of the best. Prices are low, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is fun and inviting. What more could you ask for?
House of Pies
Do you enjoy pie? Of course you do! Who doesn’t? House of Pies is the place to go to satisfy your next pie craving. This place makes some awesome pies that simply cannot be beat. From pumpkin pie to lemon pie, there’s something for everyone in this little shop, and you’re sure to leave with a happy sweet tooth.
Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe
Another fabulous Mexican food option, Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe is a sit-down restaurant serving up all of your traditional Mexican food favorites. Whether you’re craving enchiladas, tacos, or tamales, they have it here, and they’ll make it fresh and delicious just like they make all of their food.
Be sure to finish off your meal with a warm sopapilla topped with ice cream. Yum!
Niko Niko’s
An extremely popular Greek food joint, Niko Niko’s is a must-try place for everyone who visits the Houston area. Just like Local Foods, this is a local chain, meaning there is always one close by. Stop in, get a gyro sandwich, and taste the goodness of this lovely place. We’re betting you’ll be back for more after that first experience.
Frank’s Pizza
Those who are looking for a fabulous meal on a tight budget will love Frank’s Pizza. This pizza joint has some of the best pies in town at rock-bottom prices. In fact, we’re still trying to figure out how they can afford to make such great pizzas for so little money. In any case, this place is definitely worth trying!
At some point during your trip, you’re bound to need a cup of joe. This is where Boomtown Coffee steps in. Consistently rated as one of the best coffee shops in the area, this incredible shop and roastery serves only locally roasted beans, and boy does it show.
Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to sit, take in the atmosphere of the place, and really enjoy your coffee. You’ll be glad you did!
