So, I am writing this from Valdez. A small town surrounded by mountains full of glaciers on three sides and Port Valdez on the fourth. Last week we splurged on a tour that took us up in a helicopter and landed us at the base of a glacier where we were able to walk into an ice cave. On the flight in we went over old copper mines, mountain goats, waterfalls, and mountains. This picture is from the inside of the cave. This is a trip that everyone should make once, the thought that the ice we were walking under was thousands of years old was so cool!

Then last Friday we made the trek to McCarthy AK. The roads there are as bad as advertised, three hours of jaw rattling, bone bouncing, bruising pot holes with occasional railroad ties and the dreaded spikes. At the end of the road is a couple of parking lots and a foot bridge. Turns out that there is a vehicle bridge but it cost $250 to cross so the rest walk across and then pay $10pp for a round trip ticket to Kennicott.. The town was built for mining copper and there are tailings littering the ground. Some of the original buildings have been restored and opened as museums. We were starving after the long road in so we stopped to get something to eat, only problem was it was a cash only place and all we had was $9 which got us a small cup of chicken noodle soup to share. Note to self to start keeping a stash of cash. Spent a bit of time meeting some of the business owners and then headed back. The scenery was amazing but don't think we would make the drive again.
