5 Tips for a Great RV Memorial Day Weekend Getaway
05-13-2016

Memorial Day is a time for family outings and patriotic activities. It is the first long weekend that kicks off summer for many people. It is a popular weekend for a quickie vacation. This year Memorial Day is on May 30, so you still have some time to plan a mini vaca – and these tips will help.
Plan Ahead
The sooner you plan ahead the better chance you have of getting into the campground of your choice. Start doing your research early to find a destination and a campground. Plan as far ahead as possible. However, if you find that you are down to the wire and don’t have the luxury of time, read on to find out what you can do.
Opt for Out of the Way Campgrounds
The popular campgrounds tend to get filled early but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a great place to park. Look for lesser known, out of the way campgrounds that are near your chosen destination. You can also look for destinations that are not huge tourist draws. There are a lot of places all over the country that may not be well known or wildly popular, but they still have a lot to offer. So don’t limit yourself or your options.

Find Fun Stuff to Do
Once you have a destination in mind it’s time to find fun stuff to do. Google is a great tool for finding, well, just about anything, so finding fun activities is a piece of cake. With all the Google updates in recent years, the platform is more intuitive and responsive than ever. When you search, use a search phrase like “memorial day activities <city> 2016.” Then just cruise through your choices.
Look for Something Close to Home
It is sometimes easier to find something close to home. Quick jaunts and day trips can be just as fun as weekend getaways. Check out places that are within a day’s drive and look for nice campgrounds. Research your state to find interesting attractions. You would be surprised at the things that are an hour or so from your front door. All you have to do is look.
Go Off Grid
Some of the best RV getaways are totally off grid – it can also be a little easier to find a last minute site when you boondock. We are planning to install solar panels on our trailer, but even if you don’t you can still have an awesome time. Being willing to camp without hook ups gives you more options. You can park in the primitive camping area of a campground or hit a nearby state or national park.
Of course, staying home has its merits too. But if you are looking for a great excuse to break out the RV, then this is a prime opportunity. If you are a full timer, like us, a change of scenery may be just what the doctor ordered.
