5 Great Winter Camping Locations

Winter is just around the corner, and for many that means it’s time to think about packing the RV away for a few months. Others, however, aren’t quite ready to give up the camping life. Maybe they live in their RV full-time, or maybe they don’t mind traveling to find warmth for some weeks away during the winter months.

Either way, they key to RVing right on through the cold season is to find the ideal camping spots.

Obviously, you’re going to want your winter camping location to be warm. However, this isn’t necessarily the only thing to consider; you’ll also want to think about what there is to do in the area. After all, what’s the point in traveling if there’s nothing to do near the campground? Ensuring there are fun things to do and see is especially important for those who plan to have an extended stay in their winter RVing location.

Luckily, there are plenty of locations that offer both warmth and fun throughout the winter season. Whether you’re looking to head southeast, southwest, or to the warmth of the desert, there’s an amazing winter camping location for you.

Here are our favorites.
#1: Orlando, FL
It’s impossible not to have fun in Orlando. You’re surrounded by the world’s best amusement parks, making this the ideal place for thrill seekers to settle down or visit during the winter months.

If you’ll be staying for a few months, invest in a Disney World or Universal Orlando annual pass, and don’t forget to make time for Legoland and Seaworld as well!

#2: San Diego, CA
Another great winter location that offers plenty of fun and sunny weather is San Diego. This SoCal city is almost always warm, and sometimes even sees hot weather in the middle of winter!

Additionally, San Diego has tons of awesome stuff to see and do. Seaworld is an excellent destination for thrill seekers, while the San Diego Zoo is an excellent place to see all kinds of wildlife.

One of the best things about San Diego is that it’s located near lots of other awesome winter camping destinations. Therefore, if you get tired of San Diego and want to move on to another location, you can do so without crossing over into the cold weather. Disneyland in Anaheim is one example of a place you could go, as are the warm SoCal beaches.
#3: The Florida Keys
Like the idea of being in Florida but don’t really care for theme parks? The Florida Keys might be the place for you. The Keys are as far south as you can get without leaving the US, meaning they are the warmest location in the country overall. Besides that, the Keys are absolutely beautiful, and something everyone should experience at least once.

Activities here include excellent snorkeling, walking adorable streets, checking out local wildlife, and more. That said, most people find themselves spending the vast majority of their time relaxing on the beach. After all, who could resist a white sand beach with crystal clear waters and a bright sunny sky? We know we can’t!

#4: Galveston, TX
If you prefer to stay more central but still south enough to enjoy mostly warm weather, you might consider Galveston Island in Texas. While Galveston does see some cooler temperatures during the winter months, the island is warmer overall than the rest of the country. Besides that, the town of Galveston is absolutely adorable and packed with fun stuff to see and do.

Since Galveston is an island, you will have plenty of beaches to play on. Besides that, there are also tons of tiny museums to explore, a super cute downtown to stroll through (check out the live street music on the weekends), and some boat ride tours to take.

Lots of people enjoy the Schlitterbahn Water Park, and others choose to visit Moody Gardens. Both are well worth visiting, and if you’re spending the whole winter, you’ll have time to see both.

Of course, if you run out of things to do, you can always head about 45 minutes north to Houston, where there are tons of super cool museums.
#5: Phoenix, AZ
The final location on our list is the only one that’s not part of a coastal state. The hot daytime weather in Phoenix makes it a great place to be in winter.

It’s good to be aware, however, that things do still get quite nippy at night, meaning you will have to wrap your water hose and take other cold-weather precautions. Still, the daytime temperatures tend to make up for the chilly nights, and the cooler nighttime weather is great for campfires anyway.
