If you’ve ever spent an extended amount of time in an RV, you likely already know that things break. From cracked water lines to tears in the roof, any RV owner is sure to come across their own fair share of problems. For this reason, we keep a fully stocked toolbox on hand at all times.
That said, sometimes the typical tools just won't do the trick. In these instances, it is incredibly handy to have a variety of other options stocked and ready to go. For us, this means keeping a number of unusual adhesives in a cabinet for those all-too-frequent quick fixes.
What are these adhesives? Well, we do of course keep duct tape and super glue around. However, these other products we’re about to list are much less common, and most of the time, much more useful.
#1: Self-Fusing Silicone Plumber’s Tape
A roll of this stuff could save you from the water nightmare of a lifetime. Wound tightly enough, a strip of self-fusing silicone tape can stop a leak in its tracks. For example, cracked water lines and holes in your freshwater hose can be quickly and easily patched until a more permanent repair can be put in place.
#2: Eternabond Tape
Rips and tears in the roof are a part of life for the typical RVer. Fortunately, we have found a nifty little thing called Eternabond Tape. This amazing adhesive patches small tears in the rooftop in no time flat. We used it to patch our plastic skylight when it became cracked and it has performed beautifully. It also works nicely as a very temporary repair for small cracks in holding tanks.
#3: Teflon Tape
From getting a good grip on the campground water connection to making sure your water heater plug is sealed in tight after a good cleaning, Teflon Tape has a variety of uses. This is definitely a good product to have on hand, and by using it in conjunction with the self-fusing tape and Eternabond Tape mentioned above, you should be able to fix almost any water-related problem.
#4: Plasti-Mend Black
Cracked holding tanks are yet another water-related issue you may want to prepare for. While a piece of Eternabond will temporarily patch small cracks, Plasti-Mend Black is a much better tool for the job. This goopy glue contains chemicals that will literally melt the plastic of your holding tank and weld it back together. It is easy for anyone to use and is much cheaper than replacing a tank entirely.
These are our four favorite adhesives to use around the RV. Do you have a favorite adhesive that I missed? Please let me know in the comments.
